Missing Page Bug

Can someone explain to me what causes the missing page bug exactly? I'm assuming you are all quite familiar with it, I know it has to do with deleting a post inside a topic but not much more than that.

You go to a thread and see that the current poster in that thread is not on the page number indicated. For example if I make a post but the last poster on that thread is another user, you have to manually enter in the correct page number to see that person's post.

There most commonly seen in IB and CTFG, though I've seen it in other area's as well. Usually if the thread is a high trafficked thread or has a lot of edits/deleted posts. Not sure if the deleted posts/edits causes the missing page to happen, it's just a theory.

The maintenance bug may also have something to do with it as well where you try to make a post and you go to the "maintenance page" even though you know that there is no maintenance being done at the time. Your post is technically in the system, but it won't show up for a bit and it's long after other's have posted. Won't even show up in notifications if you're quoting. Refreshing to make your post appear causes multiple posts to occur.

Well, judging by how I managed to accidentally make a whole page in the café disappear, unsuccessfully deleting a post was the cause this time. Looks like the reported number of posts in the thread was decreased while the post itself was not deleted, as even the number of pages shown on the CTFG page decreased by one. This might not necessarily be the only cause for this, though.

Jacob knows that this is the most trafficked sub-forum (Minus CTFG because it would just disappear there) which is why he posted it here.

Good thinking, Jacob, I have no idea how the bug happens tho apart from the "deleting posts" theory.

The page number doesn't always increase the way that it should.

Every now and then a post that would create a new page doesn't quite make it- the post will be created but the page will not be readily accessible. That's basically what Misaki was saying.


I noticed that there was already an attempt to fix this by incrementing the page number at the last post of the preceding page, but it isn't always successful.

Since there is a set number of posts per page, I think that this bug happens on threads that are so active that multiple people are posting at the same exact time (such as the Waifu game thread). Add the deletion of a post(s) to that chaos, and the post count per page gets thrown off faster than the system can compensate, since the system has already received enough posts to warrant a new page but now there are too few posts. The system is probably waiting for the post count number on the preceding page to return to maximum before showing the next page, even though new posts are already racking up in the next page.

In essence, the more deletions per page, the longer it takes before the last page finally becomes visible.
