What's up with those tiny ass meals they are eating. Does that really fill them up?

A lot of the animes/manga that have a more realistic feel to them often show the characters eating things like a single slice, or just two slices of toast.
You know, really small meals.

the bento?
well they're making it all the time when homemade food is asked... but in the old days, the bento box used to be a bit BIGGER

Unlike in the west and mostly America, people eat small portions of food for breakfast. Weight you down more when your on the move i guess.

When home staying with a Japanese family in Saitama I was fed this breakfast.
1) Miso Soup
2) White Rice
3) Betarazuke
4) Grilled Pork simmered in Ginger Tonka Sauce
5) Green Tea
6) Golden Curry
Granted most people in the house were skinny but Sometimes Japanese eat weird things for breakfast. It's just something you have to get used to.

It's actually better to eat smaller amounts more often during the day than it is to eat three large meals.

When I visited Thailand I noticed everybody snacked a lot more throughout the day. And I dunno about you guys but when I order sushi or buy it from safeway/vons, I'll have like 4-5 rolls and be pretty good. Don't think size of the meal is as important as the nutritional value of it.
