What happened to Samus?
What do you think Samus's ass looks like in Zero Mission?

Remember the 90s Samus? And then they remade her with the Zero Suit look, making her look like a fat assed Barbie doll:
As you can see, she has less clothes in Super Metroid (even though it is from the front, you can see it's a black thong) but she looks more like a warrior with visible muscle tone. Then in Zero Mission, her body has gone all soft and her pose signal weakness.
Should Samus really have a soft body? Isn't it more suitable with the toned body she had in Super Metroid?

Anyways, op... They redesigned due to technological improvements and keeping nintendos (stupid) family fun presence with their main series.
She was dressed provocatively before because initially it would be hard to tell she was a woman otherwise and also she was one of the few female protagonists at the time.
They give her a body suit to make her look alluring, but not too slutty. It makes sense to wear such a thing for a space suite anyways.

The reason is probably the fact that Super Metroid and Zero Mission happen years apart. Zero Mission is basically a sort of rewrite to the original Metroid. Shows us what happened after Samus defeated Mother Brain in Zebes. Then comes the Metroid Prime series where she still wears that Zero Suit of hers. She presumably stops using it by the time the events of Metroid 2: Return of Samus and then finally goes on to Super Metroid, in which Samus is years older and probably more physically fit and wears that black bikini thing. By the time Metroid Fusion rolls around, she goes back to wearing a blue outfit, although not all-covering like the Zero Suit.
Now true, in the original Metroid it is show that Samus wears some kind of pink bikini thing, but Zero Mission basically overwrites that.
