Probably cause, spain did a lot of shit in central and south america back in the good ole days, so they associate most countries in that region to speak some form of spanish. Very few people even know that Portugal was even aroun and colonizing back then.

Maybe it has to do with the fact that they're both based on Latin.
I've met Spanish speakers who can read Portuguese enough to get the gist of what the text is saying, but not effectively communicate in Portuguese.

If that was true then i should be able to read and speak nigger spanish since Catalan is similar.. i can't even understand basic spanish... to a point.
