Well, I downloaded the 1080P H264 Mkv of Fate Stay Night Unlimited Bladeworks for shits and giggles right, just to see what the fuss over 1080P is.
I've scoured the internet only to be pulled in 180 directions as to what I have to do in order to get these files to play smoothly.
My PC Specs are as follows:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-OS:Windows 7 Home Premium
-CPU: AMD Phenom 8650 Triple-Core Processor 2.30GHz
-RAM: 8 GB DDR2
-Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 9800GT
-Media Players: VLC, Media Player Classic Home Cinema
-And whatever coreAVC is? (this often came up in the forums I browsed)
I hear these things are pretty damn intensive on your system, but my system seems to be up to the task, I hear its usually encoder problems and such.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My questions is essentially
Is it possible for me to get this thing to play smoothly, if so, a nice step by step walk through on it would be very much appreciated.
And of course, shiny reps for those who seek it.

Firstly, one should never use VLC.
Your computer has more than enough horsepower to play 1080p without issues. All you need to do is download CCCP and play the files with Media Player Classic.

Has it been not running smoothly. With what you have the vid should run nice if their isn't a lot of background programs running.
I have my crappy old laptop running the new Ore no Imouto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai that 1080x720 x264 cabled into my flat screen and your set up is way better than that crappy 4yr old thing. should be good.

*awkward pause ".....fucktard"
I lol'd, yeah, I don't use VLC often. It's weird as hell though, for the video plays a lot smoother in that than MPHC for some reason *shrugs*.
I'll give CCCP a go and see if that works, any settings and configurations I need to keep my eye out for?

                        Hmmm...no dice so far.
I'm checking my CPU and processes, doesn't seem to be anything abnormal, CPU usage is around 5% or so, but still the laggy ass playback and audio drop. The only difference now is that VLC does pretty much the same thing...except worse.
Any ideas?

I have XP, but what I do to get less choppy Blu ray quality movies is go to start menu, right click "My computer" go to Advanced, click on Settings under "Performance" then click the bubble "adjust for best preformance" and then ok. Your desktop will look depressing, but you'll be able to hopefully have less jumpy movie experience, except for some parts when there are weird visual scenes and potentially action intensive scenes (if there are, there are a bunch in Ghost in the Shell).
But yea your specs are way over what should be needed, not exactly sure what your problem is. >.

Hmmm, I'll have to do more research, there must be something conflicting within my system and what not.
Thanks anyways, I'll let you know if I find anything useful.

Like ImperialX said.. use CCCP w/ Media Player Classic..
What I find helps smooth out my videos is to disable the Windows Areo effects.. this can be done in media player classic by going to View--> Renderer Settings --> Presentation --> Disable desktop composition (Areo)

Before you do anything at all reinstall cccp with the latest stable because doing so can fix a number of problems although speed is not normally one of them.
Update video card drivers, Update directx, make sure coreavc is updated to 2.0 and make sure you are actually using coreavc. I also suggest you make sure that cuda is or is not turned on depending on whether or not you wish to have it on. Having cuda on will pretty much reduce cpu use to 0 but relay solely on your video card. This could explain the low cpu usage. I would suggest having this turned off from my own experience but others have had better luck with cuda than myself. If the coreavc icon is green while in use then cuda is turned on. If it is blue then it is turned off.
Still having issues then I suggest trying the following although please note that if you are experiencing large frame drops then this might not do the trick but hey its worth a shot.
View > options > output > directshow video.
It should be set to EVR Custom Pres by default. I have found that in some computers trying out Haali (very rarely this is the case) or more often Overlay Mixer (fastest of renderers but can not use windows Aero) seems to have some speed up with frame rate. EVR can have some issues with nvidia card but if you are the latest stable then it shouldn't be a problem especially since you and I have the same video card. You must close and reopen mpc in order for the new renderer to take effect.
If none of that works then why not give cccp beta a try.

I am currently using the 2010-9-25 version and its working rather well for me.
If all else fails format because something is fucked.
VLC sucks as everyone before me has stated.
PS: UBW movie sucks. Go watch something else in 1080p.
Edit: I have just found out that cccp has updated their stable version. I have not tried this out yet and can not say for sure how good it is. May or may not solve your problems.

Why does everyone keep saying VLC sucks? Not everyone watches subbed videos.
Even if you don't watch subbed videos it still blows. It's so easy to break VLC its not even funny anymore. Enjoy your random blocking and crashing.
