I'd be surprised if we could even find 10 people who regularly listen to hip hop here lol. But man, that's a nostalgic list. Big Pun huh? I was never a big fan, but I remember when he was huge. Sad that he's become a forgotten man.
For me, Lupe ranks as #1. His words are solid, simply can't be beat. I listen to a lot of Pete & Perq, Panacea, Common, and just about anything Nujabes produces. Nothing beats the 90's, but I've been listening to a lot of new stuff lately. Kid Cudi's stuff isn't too bad.
I'm curious as to how people here define hip hop and rap, and whether they draw a line between the two.

Word!!!actually got a reply to this thread i was starting to think it was a lost cause, Im also a big fan of Common and Lupe, never heard of the others on your list but i will look them up.
as far as hiphop and rap, i define Hiphop as being whats presented to the vast majority, what you here on the radio, at clubs on TV thats hiphop, its not necessarily a bad thing, but its whats more easily absorbed by the people, alot of singles are hiphop, "flavor in your ear" was hiphop, "Baby got back" was hiphop.
but rap to me is the artform in its rawest style, two person battle, thats rap, freestyling on the corner, thats rap, a 3 min acapella solo, thats rap.

Heres my list and in no order whatsoever
1. Lupe
2. Common
3. Nujabes
4. Big Pun
5. Immortal Technique
6. Nana
Hip Hop nowadays, IMO, focuses on making dance hits, or is for the younger generation. it has to do whether the artist takes of or not. There is rarely any good lyricists mainstream.

Immortal Technique's Dance with the Devil is a powerful song. I don't usually remember specific track names, but I can remember that one vividly. His lyrics are always so raw, and he's got a lot of interesting opinions.
I used to separate rap and hip-hop musically too, but I was talking with someone today who defined hip hop as a culture and rap as a kind of music that falls within it. I'm still mulling the idea over in my mind, but it makes sense, and I'm beginning to largely agree with it. Idk I thought that was a pretty interesting approach.
As for mainstream, yeah I agree. Rap's been watered down so much these days that the kind of tracks that sell are the ones that don't even have a message anymore. It's all sex, drugs and money. It makes me wonder how they can sell millions, while people who're actually trying to convey thoughts across can only sell mere thousands. Meh.

With you on #4. Dug his style up until then, and then he totally flipped his style. Same for The Roots. Love their 90's stuff, but their newer songs aren't as great.

I have extreme distaste for pop music, so no popular artists will be on my list. I also don't have an extensive hip hop collection outside of the artists I list.
#1 Nujabes
#2 Gorillaz (If it counts)
#3 Reggie Watts (If it counts)
#4 Handsome Boy Modeling School
I don't really have too many tracks from #3-4. I plan to buy some of it later.

Oh hey a Hip Hop thread, wasn't expecting to find one of these on Fakku. I guess If I had to narrow it down to five artist it would go(in no particular order):
-Lupe Fiasco(Enemy of the State mixtape was absurdly good).
-Mos Def & Talib Kweli as the group Black Star(They are good seperate but when they are way better together).
-Black Thought from The Roots.
-Jay Electronica
-Blu
There you go, that was really hard to cut it down to five.

Yeah it is sad but that is what is selling so that's what the labels will keep marketing. I miss the days when people with something interesting to say would be the ones on top and all the idiots would be laughed out of the Hip Hop game.
