Help with building a desktop
0
My previous topic was how to get rid of my shitty old desktop, thanks for everyone who replied. For now it's being used as a doorstop since i havent had time to do something with it.
Now it's time I buy a new desktop for my university course. I need a beast who will run software like Autodesk Maya, Zbrush and Photoshop without any sort of lag (for those wondering I do a digital art course).
My friend has a gaming laptop that runs anything without faltering so I'm thinking a gaming PC would cater to all my needs. I just don't know anything about parts, computer lingo, nothing. My budget is around £800 ($1231,44). It isn't a lot but I'm poor, I don't plan on buying a monitor or keyboard either as I have those.
Any help would be greatly appreciated since I dont even know where to begin. Thanks!

£800 is enough.
any parts and price i list will be from ebuyer as i dont want to check the price on the site i give you see the bottom of the post.
CPU: if you go for Intel, get one with that has a "k" at the end of the model as these are unlocked, meaning they can be overclocked, will also need a motherboard that supports overclocking. AMD are cheaper but i dont know much about them.
skylake is this year intel model and will be a bit more expensive.
and the CPU for i7 start at £300 and i5 at £210
Haswell is last year intel CPU
i7, i7
both have fan and heat sink and price is from £280-£290
i5, i5
range from £180-£200
skylake mother boards start around £70
Haswell mother boards start around £30 (but you will want a ATX form) which start at £50
MSI Z97 £65 supports upto 32gb RAM and overclocking
not sure about GPU for Photoshop/autodesk, but a quick look on the net and the net says 256 bit, more cuda core and GPU clock speed is better then the GPU RAM
Here is one that is £250.
Case: there are lot of cases out there ranging from full size to mini, plus a lot of full tower cases are aimed at gaming.
if you don't care about of the look of the case then you can get a cheap one.
but here is cheap one at £40
Aerocool X-Predator X1
PSU will depend on how much power you will need
here is 750w one at £100
PSU
RAM are cheap to buy and you have chose of branded and non branded and brand that people have not heard of
here is a 16GB kit at £65
RAM
so if you go for an
CPU: £285
PSU: £100
GPU: £250
Case: £40
Motherboard: £65
RAM: £65
=£805
You can use the stock fan that comes with the CPU but if plan you plan to overlock you want to spend a bit more on an after market fan, if you do this you will also need to buy thermal paste.
if you shop around you can get them cheaper as i have seen them about £20 difference in some places and swapping some parts will make it cheaper.
Should have asked first but does you budget include OS or not.
Parts can be bought from ebuyer, maplin, scan, amazon, newegg (has a UK site) these are uk site i know of and there some other but unsure of the name at this time but Google can help you find other UK site to but parts from.

Spoiler:
Thank you for the help. I hand't thought about the OS , I thought it just came with everything else. Will need to consider that. Also, I need to ask what you mean by Overlocking?

Also, I need to ask what you mean by Overlocking? It increases the speed of your CPU, therefore increasing performance. But also increases the risk of instability of your system, electricity bill, power consumption for PSU, and increases Heat.
If you look online you can find stable clock speed for which model you want, but you will need to buy an after market fan to keep the CPU cool.
If you don't want to overclock then buy a normal CPU as they are cheaper, but do not buy one that has a letter on the end of the model number,

honestly if you were just a gamer, I would definitely tell you to go either AMD or Intel that have 4 cores and cheapest price. But since you in graphic design, go with the i7. The list that was suggest to you is good but as for the power supply just refer to this http://coolermaster.outervision.com/ and calculate around what the recommended psu then add additional 100w and look for a gold or higher rating on the box of the power supply you like. This mainly because if you only using 400w of power but your psu can go up to 1500w it will hurt your psu and money because you loosing the efficiency on the psu when you not using like 80% of the power (depend on the psu)
btw psu rating are like this:
regular > bronze > silver > gold > platinum > titanium

i wasn't sure about the how much watt was gonna be needed, so i just picked one that should be more then enough.
But 500w should be enough
but if he plans to overclock, sli/crossfire he will need more power, which i don't he will, plus if he wants to sli/crossfire he will need to change to mobo for that supports it

A word of caution since you're new. Overclocking will void warranties. It's a good way to squeeze extra value out of your CPU, but you probably don't need to do it. Please make sure to do a lot of homework (research) before you make a purchase. I think that goes without saying for such a large investment, but I think some people don't get it. Reading through Amazon's review section is not even remotely enough information. You should really look everything up thoroughly. For example I ran into an unexpected problem where my heatsink was too large and my motherboard layout prevented me from installing all my RAM modules the way I wanted to.
My top resource is actually reddit's /r/buildapc community. If you show them that you've taken a few steps by yourself, they will tell you anything you need to know. You should still verify that information but they're usually reliable. Reddit also has /r/buildapcsales which is a great resource for getting parts at a discount.
Other resources:
How do I know if X graphics card is better than Y? http://www.anandtech.com/bench/GPU15/1248
This site here is great for getting an idea of how balanced systems look http://www.logicalincrements.com/
And if you need help putting everything together, just look it up on YouTube. There are tons of video guides from different people.
Oh and please don't forget to screw in your motherboard standoffs before putting your motherboard in. ALSO don't forget your IO shield goes in FIRST.

Thanks guys, lots of stuff here that'll need to look into. I have friends IRL that can help me build a pc, so I'll research and come up with a build and cross check with them to avoid any fuck-ups.
Dont think i'll be doing the overlocking, especially if it voids any warranty.
Thanks a lot C:

I got my new rig back in January, just for those interested here is what I got for my budget
Intel Core i7 4790
ASRock H97 PRO4 Motherboard
GTX 970
16gb RAM
This sweetie can run everything I need and more. I bought a legit version of windows 7 for £30 on amazon, then upgraded to windows 10. I built it myself with some help from friends, everything runs smoothly. Was terrifying holding a GTX 970 in my hands, one miscalculated move and that's £250 on the floor. Was fun building it nevertheless!
Thanks everyone for the help

are you stock fan on the CPU or an after market one.
Should have used a CPU that ends in K as this are unlocked and can be overclocked.

I don't really care for overclocking, sounds like more of hassle specially since I don't know what I'm doing.
