Start > Control Panel > Sound and Audio Device > Voice/Input > Microphone > Volume
It may be turned all the way down, I know Vista and 7 set it half-volume by default.
More often than not, most of your Windows related problems can be fixed by screwing around with the control panel if you're a beginner. I recommend taking a look at all of the settings and experimenting just to learn what each one is, it will help you manage your OS a lot better.
You should upgrade to Windows 7. Legally of course "cough".
There should also be a setting to test if your hardware is working correctly.

Easier way is to just right-click the volume icon in the tray and choose "recording devices." Make sure the microphone is enabled and set as default as well as having its volume all the way up and you may have to check mic boost if you are still sounding soft.
If you don't see your mic you probably need to install some sound drivers to make it work and for that you would have to visit your manufacturer's site and try to find it in the support section.

Ok it is enabled. The volume is all the way up. I was going to max the mic boost but idk what it is I don't mess with it. I'll try installing some drivers.
That did the trick. I had to update my drivers.
Ok new problem. I can't hear anything >.>

Just uninstall vista.
Seriously.
The only reason I haven't is because I have 450gb of stuff I don't want to redownload.

Resize > Move files over over to new partition > repeat until everything you need is on the other partition and then you can reformat and install Windows 7.
There is other freeware that can do this, just gotta Google it.
Always install your OS onto a different partition.

Do the same thing as before. Right-click the volume icon but this time go to "playback devices." Make sure speakers are enabled and set as default and go to properties and make sure your levels are all at max. Leave bass balance and treble at 0 unless you want to experiment with how some things sound like.
