I think some fag is piggybacking my wifi
0
At around the same time of night, my torrent connection drops at least 800kb and my firewall detects a new network trying to access my wifi. I suspect it's the high school fag next door.
How do I know if someone is piggybacking wifi. And if possible, can i "visit" his computer and leave a nice little surprise?

Login to the modem/router and see want ip/user computers name. Fix is simple... key a random number and make a usb key so if you need to hook up another computer or let a friend use it.. the usb will just set it up without asking... use use a phase that only you would know.. also you can ban that ip from your modem too.. meh

Do not use WEP as your password, I can crack that thing in minutes. Also make a complex password that only you will know and mix it up a bit with uppercases, numbers, and special characters. The longer the better. Man, I forgot how to access the other computers on the wifi network. Rarely do it as it is mostly me who uses it.

Is your router set up for remote access to the logs? [this shows who, by ip number, has been on your network. If you don't just connect directly with cable] What brand do you have?
I think most of them nowadays have this off by default. [Tegumi might know more about this but I will try my best]
[For remote access]
Open up command prompt
type 'ipconfig'
copy the 'default gateway' entry should be 4 sets of numbers like a ip address. The default gateway is, to make it short, the ip address of your router. It is usually something like 192.168.0.1, 192.168.1.1, or 192.168.2.1. this are just default addresses.
Open up your web browser of choice and copy this number into the address bar then hit enter. [If it requires a username and password, place those in. If you don't know the password first try the default username and password according to your model of router.]
Router information and other stuff is shown here as well as a activity log.
From there, You should be able to get the name/ip of whoever is leeching from you.

WPA-2 should be enough to deter the average smuck WEP is too weak and if you're torrenting it's easy to break into.

Sorry to say he is right, even though there are a few ways to do this doing so will net you into some bad stuff. It'll be better to upgrade to WPA-2 and wall off this leecher's access.

I don't see how going through their computer, when they are using your wifi -Illegally i might add- can be any worse for you.. i mean really, the faggot is breaking the law by stealing your internets.

Edit: Two wrongs don't make a right, I suspect OP wants to do something to the leecher's computer which will land him into hot water.
Really risking legal fees and jail just isn't worth it over someone leeching your net because you left it open.

Steal his unencrypted packets and profit. He basically put himself in the target position for any man-in-the-middle attacks.

Just change your password and security type. I use a WPA-PSK security type and my password is 10 characters long mixed of both numbers and letters.

Also use a fucking green-list. I can't believe people don't use them more often. Instead banning specific MAC addresses, you create a list of "allowed" devices. This tends to stump the majority of script kiddies.
