Is it a bad idea to turn off the UAC on my computer?

User Account Control (UAC) can help you prevent unauthorized changes to your computer. It works by prompting you for permission when a task requires administrative rights, such as installing software or changing settings that affect other users.
Taken from the Microsoft website.
But turning it off for specific programs may help. Such as applocale.

if you know what you are doing and what you are installing and keep your anti virus up to date then turn it off otherwise it will get really really annoying
if none of the above apply to you do not turn it off

Honestly, I keep it on. A healthy dose of paranoia can be a big help keeping your computer running properly. It might get a bit annoying, but it's a good stopgap for keeping things safe. My parent's computer has been constantly wanting to update Java, and some of the UAC prompts didn't list a publisher. That reason alone is enough for me.
As a side note, it can also be used as a gauge for whether or not your computer is running sluggishly. If I've been using my PC constantly for a few days straight it can take a minute or two to pop up sometimes and I know I need to go ahead and properly restart it. 100% accurate? Maybe not, but it keeps me on my toes.
