I think basing the status of rock on that sad version of 'we are the world' is a bit silly, but it's not like you don't have a point. There's way too many rappers out there, and if you have listened to the radio lately, you can easily tell that new rap/hip-hop songs easily outnumber rock. Why? Simple, it's so easy. They don't actually have to try anymore. Half the time they crank stuff out that sounds like it was produced within a single day without any real effort put into it. You can't do that with Rock (well you could, but most bands try not to). So rap = easy money, which means more rappers and more crappy songs, which has eventually resulted in his over-saturation. It isn't just rock that seems less, other genres are affected as well.

As more and more subgenres sprout into existence, fewer will listen to only the few types we had before. While today, they may sound different, many bands have rock influences, and are just changing from what we know as classic rock to what we hear now.
I myself am a huge fan of death/black/doom/power metal, but still listen to good oldies from way back when. I try to stay open minded about all types of music and dont limit myself to one genre.
I dont listen to the radio at all anymore though, the music I prefer isnt played on it (not even on premium channels). So I will agree that some genres are kind of taking over.

Actually, with the dawn of things like social networking and sites like last.fm, underground rock (and every other genre for that matter) is flourishing.
People don't have to rely on friends, record stores and the mass media to discover new bands anymore - everything is like, right there. Last.fm is a case in point.
