Issues regarding music files

I wasn't too sure if this was then right place, but I'll try here anyways.
I just recently recieved a whole bunch of music from a friend a day or so ago (I listened to then tracks before and was mesmerized by them, so I had asked them to put them all on my phone). However, my issue is that he had renamed all the tracks. I have asked him why and he said when his others friends have given it to him they had no info on the them files regarding a title or the artist. Even though his friend actually knows this info, he never bothered to asked him, so he can properly list everything.
Problem is, I would like to know that imfo, so I can find more of it. I had little luck in finding them majority of them, as only a handful had lyrics (of which I found them info for those but inly on a few of them).
Does a program exist where it can read the music files and gather up that information? Or do I have to try and find at least a little info on each song before I try?

Winamp can identify files through the sound alone using its world wide database. It's likely to give you artist, album and more.

Winamp or Windows Media Player can retrieve the info. However, to fill in the info, they need at least either the ID attached for the song OR the artist in question. If he doesn't have one of those, then bugger all really.

"Autotagging analyzes a track's audio using the Gracenote service and retrieves the song's ID2 and ID3 metadata".
