Leg/Ankle weights
0
I have done some reading on the internet about leg/ankle weights. Originally I wanted to use them for running but it turns out that is one of the worst things I could have possible done. (It screws up your leg movements and changes your centre of gravity and will turn you into a cripple)
I have to walk for over 2 hours most days of the week, so I was thinking of leg weights for walking. Now when I read this on the internet I got mixed answers.
Does anyone have any experience with leg/ankle weights who could be me some insight?

DO NOT OVER WORK YOURSELF.
I have use ankle weights atarting with 1 LB. each work up to (currently) 5 lbs. each.
I have done this very slowly.
I have never done this with running but with walking, kicking* (hapkido and muay thai), leg raises and other non running excersise.
FIRST AND FOREMOST ALWAYS DO FLEXIBLITY AND STRETCHING EXCERSISES TO PREVENT INJURIES. WHEN YOUR LEGS START TO ACHE REMOVE THE WEIGHTS. BE PATIENT WHILE YOU ARE DEVELOPING YOUR STRENGTH AND STAMINA.

there ok I used a pair for running for a while and they busted after a month. they are definitly better for walking. if you want to run and add weight I would say buy a vest it is way better for doing high impact exercises. adjustable weight and last longer

No. That's what I'm going to say about ankle weights. Ankle/Wrist Weights (however you use them), f*** up your joints big time if you use them quite often.
I'd say they are fine for walking, though, not gonna kill you but not the best thing for you.
But if I were you I'd throw that garbage away and order a weighted vest, though they are quite expensive. My 20lb one was 50 dollars US (its the exact one in the picture above).

On a slightly related note, running wrist weights i've found to be quite effective. Because of the arm motion involved in running, it gives you some nice tone in your forearms

(From what I've heard and from logic)

So I was speaking to a friend at college about exercise and stuff and I mentioned weighted gear. The guy is a complete moron and told me he runs in ankle weights. I told him the risks and he just simply said don't believe everything you read on the Internet and also told me he has spoken to a fitness advisor about it.
I do intend to walk in my leg weights 1/2 days of the week.
I would be doing this on my walk to college so a weighted vest would be too awkward to take to college.
How would it be if I wore the ankle weights all day long while I was at college?

Think of something along the lines of walking in cement shoes all day. Well if your wearing ankle weights all day long, you'll get sweaty down where the weight is strapped, it'll feel a hell lot lighter walking when you take them off but I doubt it will do anything sufficient since walking doesn't really burn many calories even if your walking up a hill. The added weight throughout the day doesn't do much but put unnecessary strain on your joints.
Depends on how much weight you are putting on your ankles. It can help increase intensity but then again I'm a naysayer to ankle weights, the cons outweigh the pros. I mean if your going to run and you want to have an intense workout, then the simple solution is...RUN FUCKING FASTER! Sprint. I realized how ankle weights make people look like such douches as it seems a lot of them are just wearing it to show off. In a way, someone wearing them to me is like someone saying "look I'm so hardcore because I wear ankle weights". That or they don't know what ankle weights really do to the joints.
Though your friend does have a point, you shouldn't believe everything you read on the internet, just like you shouldn't believe a guy who says ankle weights are awesome just because some no-name fitness adviser told him so. If he was a good fitness adviser, he would have taken anatomy and kinesiology in college.
See how your friend's knees are in a few years (this is if he uses them regularly) cause they don't really do much damage if you use them once every week for like 30 minutes.
My friendly suggestion: take them weights and throw them out. Jog to college, you'll get a better workout, burn more calories, healthy heart and put less strain on your joints. Plus you don't have to carry the weights around all day. If anything you just need...a towel for when your sweating off those calories and of course water.
