mobo question

Ok, so i just Purchased a server mobo right,? and it has 4 processor slots I'm wondering what would be the outcome if i turned my server into a gaming pc ? ive never actually tried. How would an operating system that's not for servers utilize 256 gb of ram and 4 quad cores? Like would it actually be plausible?

64-bit windows should be able to handle it, but you won't really benefit from all the extra cores and ram

I agree with jenslyn, you may be able to get a non-server OS to work with that board and that many processors, but you won't really be able to benefit from all that power. Things don't just run faster by throwing bigger numbers at it... That is, if the game can even run in that environment in the first place.
I suppose that if you wanted to play that game at the same time as running a online server, playing music, watching videos, running a ton of actions and filters in Photoshop, and rendering a 3D scene, there wouldn't be anything stopping you XD

Windows 7 Ultimate can only support 2 CPUs. Therefore, you should get a server version of Windows or (my recommendation) run Linux off it. Personally I wouldn't see any reason getting Windows Server 08 because:
1. It costs money
2. It is more for professional use (i.e setting up large RAID arrays, trafficking packets, hosting websites.) You will have difficulty web surfing, playing flash videos, playing games, doing homework etc.
If you were to use a Linux server, you will still be able to utilize that power, you would:
1. Not have to pay any money
2. Play games, web browse, and anything you could do on a normal computer
Either way, it is a steep learning curve, so why not go Linux?

what. I can surf the web (and if you're into that, you can play flash games or do your "homework", too) on w2k3 server just fine.
Not sure what kind of crazy windows server you're running there, but w2k3 (standard is good to go for 4 cpus, enterprise for eight) has never, ever presented me with a problem when performing the above activites.
Also, ha ha ha at buying a server mobo without having a use case for it first. Hilarious.
