On internet browsers link's freeze or don't open

So a friend of mine (who apparently is way too shy to make a thread so I'm making one for her) is having internet issues. For some reason when she tries to click on a link on the internet it won't open. It's preventing her from changing her sig picture as among other things.
My aunt also has this issue, so anyone know what causes this? My friend says she uses both Chrome and Firefox and neither one works.
oh and please dont suggest clearing cache or cookies cause she already tried that.
I would search for a similar thread but the search function seems not to be working so if anyone could link to a similar thread that would be appreciated.

Try uninstalling then clean the system temporary files and whatnot with CCleaner then re-install, or scan for malware/trojans... ?

it could be some problems with the temp file like said before
find it in: c/users/(name of user)/local/temp.
it also difines where it is located based on the os.
it could also be an internet browser error, so try to update to an newer version.

Is it only with a regular click? Can the link be opened from the context menu? Can she use ctrl/shift/alt+click to open them?
You can right click any link in Firefox or Chrome and use the Copy Link Location/URL action from the context menu and paste it into the address bar as a temporary workaround.

As mentioned above, use ccleaner to clean out all the junk on the computer first.
Here is the link: http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner
When she click on the link, does it direct her to an error page with the number 404 or any number? It is possible that the DNS address on her computer has been changed. The following link will help you to reset the DNS. Set it to Obtain DNS server address automatically.
Link: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Change-TCP-IP-settings
If failed, use Malwarebyte to help you to scan for malware. When you are about to finish installing, deselect Pro version.
