Did you get insurance on it?
I always buy the protection plans because if it blows up, Yay! new T.V. or the second option is right before the protection plan expires, and if they no longer make your T.V. Break your T.V. Most places will let you put the price of your T.V. towards your new, and probably better. T.V. But check the fine print before you do anything.
O.T. I Prefer L.E.D. and you should get an protection plan on it

Most places will push LED over others. I find LCD to last me the longest and cheaper, don't like LED on the idea that they are connect to each other in a series so if one goes then you may lose a whole row (if I remember correctly). Plasma can be good at around 80 + but require a lot more ventilation and have a high burn out rate, without proper ventilation some models have been known to melt or cause fires.

Don't get a plasma. They run very hot, screen burns logos in it, and weigh a lot more than other big screens. My cousin who lives with me has a 48" plasma and I have a 45" LCD (no LED). His looks pretty bad because it is few years old and has a few burn ins and the right side has a red tinge to it. His also weighs about 30 pounds heavier and puts off significantly more heat than mine.
Honestly my regular 45" LCD looks pretty damn good once I set the colors right. The settings they start with are god-awful so be sure to tweak them. As for whether you get an LED version that is up to you. It supposedly has better colors as the back-lighting uses LEDs so darker colors look better. If you are comparing a regular to an LED and the difference is a few hundred I would get the LED version. Think of it. It is a 50" big screen that you will be living with for a long while. Go ahead and splurge on it and get the best one.
One thing for me that I don't like about my current TV is that it has automatic contrast that you can't turn off. You can tell the colors get subtly brighter or darker at times but they stick close to what I set them. I've grown used to it now but it used to annoy me. You may or may not like that so see if that is something you can turn off in the settings before you buy.
Also with my current TV I noticed that if I plugged it into my computer via HDMI the screen is cropped and the edges go over the screen. When I finally resized it in the nvidia control panel it turned out the resolution was 1824x1026. Not full 1080 but close enough. The TV was given to me so I'm not complaining.
Remember the LEDs only pertain to the back-lighting so don't worry about what the previous poster said too much. With regular LCDs you have CFL tubes you have to replace, Plasma TVs have lamps, and LEDs have LED strips. Of them the CFL and LEDs are probably the least expensive to repair.

I have a LED, has lasted me 3 years and still going strong and weights basically nothing (great for wall mounting).
