So, any of you into prog rock? The old school 70s type, by any chance?
I totally love bands like ELP, Camel, Hypnos 69, King Crimson, Dzyan (who are Krautrock but who cares), Van der Graaf Generator, Caravan... and the stuff everybody seems to know about, like Pink Floyd, Yes and Genesis. Oh well.
I don't really dig the new school prog like Tool, too techy for my tastes. Although it's a nice change of pace with all the odd time signatures and effects orgies everywhere (the same may be said about Meshuggah I guess).
Plus, it'd nice to know whether you play an instrument. I don't really see a lot of love for prog from non-musicians nowadays. (Personally, I play bass guitar and want to found a retro prog band sometime this year)

Caravan are great, have you looked into the whole Canterbury scene subgenre? there's some amazing laid back jazzy stuff (Hatfield and the north, and Richard sinclair(who was in caravan)), insanely psychedellic stuff(Gong) and just insane little ditties (Kevin Ayers)
I'm not that much into prog interms of ELP and Genesis and King Crimson (though in the court... is a good album), but the laid back/psychedellic/spacey stuff is where it's at!

I really love psychedelic music. That's basically what got me into prog, because quite a lot of psych rockers made a transition to prog during the early 70s. Like Polyphony, Pink Floyd, CA Quintet...
I totally dig the canterbury scene, but I haven't been able to track most of the stuff down, save for 3 artists. My own sound is influenced by Camel and Caravan mostly, so...

Here! Although I'm more into the more modern, or apparently "not cool" progressive rock bands. Spock's Beard is probably my favorite.

New Prog isn't all that bad as everyone claims. I love Porcupine Tree, Riverside as much as Yes, PF and Marillion.
PT is definitely my fave band~

Everyone with a little bit of love for Progressive (Power) Metal, should give a listen to Seventh Wonder.
Their album 'Mercy Falls' is a masterpiece.

Hah, reminds me of a little discussion catfish and I had a while back... lol
As for Prog Metal, Meshuggah own the whole thing hands down IMO... now that is some mind-bending music! In more senses than one. Also, lack of fiddle-dee-diddle-dee solo overkill often seen in prog metal, always a plus in my book.

Meh, pending on what you call Prog. Green Carnation is by far my favorite band, but they changed their style multiple times, but they were definite Progressive, and probably one of my favorite songs by them was Crushed to Dust.
Sorry for the quality. Couldn't find a clip that wasn't a live concert, but it still turned out pretty well.
