PS3 power supply problem?

Alright so there's definitely something wrong with my PS3 and I was wondering if someone could help me out real quick. I did try searching other tech forums on the web but I'm still not completely sure whats up. Basically I'll just give you the order of whats going on. Note, I have a PS3 slim so there's no switch in the back.
first, my PS3 is sitting there plugged in with the red stand-by light on.
Next, I turn it on to play a game. I play anywhere from 30min to 4/6 hours (doesn't matter how long)
Then I properly shut it down and everything.
So now Its off with the red stand by light on again. It remains like this for about 5 minutes
Then after that it just dies. As in the red light just turns off.
After about 3-6 hours it'll just revive itself and the red stand-by light will turn back on again.
Then as long as i don't turn the system back on again, it can remain like this for days.
*Note this cycle has been going on for about 2 weeks now. So basically I play a game, then when I'm done it dies, then go to bed, and wake up with it magically being revived again.
So what the hell is wrong with my PS3? Is it the power supply? Or is this a cause of overheating? I can replace the power supply for not too much money but I just need to know what the problem is here. And yeah I know this is hentai site not a tech support site, but if anyone knows whats wrong with it please tell me. I'll give you plus reps if it makes you feel any better.

Maybe somebody is turning it via the PSP?
Just unplug the power cord from the outlet after you are finished using it. I do that with mine all of the time. If you leave it on standby the system is still operating. Also check your settings. There is a setting there that the PS3 can download new updates, demos, and so on automatically.

It's definitely not because of someone turning it on via PSP, and I never messed with the settings. I'll try unplugging when I'm done though, so maybe that will help. I did lose power once because of thunderstorm but the PS3, along with my 360 and VCR, were plugged into a surge protector, and they still work fine.
