Question about external hard drives

I'm not the most computer savvy guy so I'm gonna ask a stupid question. I like to keep my porn and hentai on my 8GB flash drive but it's almost full and I'm thinking about going all out and buying a 1TB external hard drive. I like how quickly my flash drive starts up so my question is, do external hard drives start up right away like a flash drive or do they take awhile? If they do start up quickly, is there a particular model/brand I should buy/avoid?
Also I plan on buying a new computer in the near future so it does need to be an external drive.

Well, most of the time, you will have exactly the same boot time between a flash disk and a external Hard-Drive. the only prerequisite is that you need to install the drives identification program on first launch(first of any plug in)and that may take a minute or two. but apart from that, nope, nothing significant.
Although beware of unknown names coming in from China or Taiwan.
Personnally, I have a Samsung 1 Terra external hard drive and it works beautifully, with a 3.0 USB connection to top it.
Hope this helped.
Also, checkout some encryption programs if you want to put some "sensible" data on there. It won't do much for connection speed, and your files will be unreadable(well, except if a governmental agency wants to know what king of hentai you like)
Cheerio and good luck!

Such a simple question that google failed to answer for me.
Thank you very much.

I suggest you to buy a external hard drive even if you takes a new computer for the reserve. 1 TB ex HDD is good and fast And I advise you to WD OR IMAGINE marks.

If i were you I'd go for a 2TB one instead.
Cons : slower
Pros : cheaper + more storage (as far as below 100$)
So if you don't mind the slower speed(even thought it won't be that much slower) I suggest a Seagate(5900RPM)(I bought one myself from that seller and it arrived in 10 days which is very fast since it was a transoceanic flight to Albania).
So far I've bought 2 of these to use as internal hard drives : the first one a year ago and the second just a few days ago.
So if you decide to buy the one i mentioned(or any other internal one) just buy an enclosure and you're set :)
Just my 2 cents.

I have two Seagate 1.5TB desktop drives that I use for backup (and porn storage....) and a 1TB Western Digital (WD) that I use to keep a constant backup (from it's built in software) of my computer and to hold some of my movies. Most of the external drives you can find in a store in the US will work (at least) pretty good. The only downside to getting an external drive now is they're still a little pricy due to the recent shortage, but I believe that's just about over.
It does help to have more than one drive so that you can have a safe back up. As Eraldi said, you can get enclosures for internal drives; so if you are getting a new pc and keeping the old you can transfer what you need from the old one and then wipe it and use it for storage.
