Mustn't Run Away...
As someone who is an avid fight fanatic, and been doing martial arts since the age of 5 the one move I never had any respect for was the spinning backfist. i mean it's showy with very little in its favor sure the added momentum adds a good bit of power to it and the placement of the strike can usually lead to a good knockout blow but seriously...it leaves the back exposed , leaves a substantial amount to luck (i.e. hoping it doesn't whiff ,or get stuffed with a low counter) ,and probably my biggest issue with it is the risk to the user, i have on four different occasions had a sparring partner throw it , miss, and injure themselves , then blame said injury on my "intentionally" striking their elbows. Well w.e whats everyone else thought on this move ,stupid or do you honestly see it being useful in a fight

It's a showy move, but you seem to be seeing people use it as a direct attack. It should be used as a counter to a punch, which eliminates the opening it creates.

Besides if you get baited into throwing one your probably paying for it hard :/ , but I do see what you mean great insight man.

High risk, high reward move. Simple as that.
Like being a glass cannon.
I would only throw it if you can trick your opponent into thinking something else is coming. Like faking a takedown, then throwing a spinning backfist or elbow.

Sorry but its flashy as fuck, The fighting equivalent of a bitch slap!
Do you remember Kickboxer when Eric Sloan uses it against that black dude... Fucking hilarious! (The fight was basically over when he used it)
Classy guy! ^___^

Sexy example of its usage. Very flashy move. Still awesome.

I was gonna post exactly what the person above me posted. Anyway, spinning backfist isn't taught in my martial art system, but I can see that it's VERY VERY powerful. Bitch slap? Not necessary. It all depends who is using it. However, the timing is very important. In my kung fu system we don't have spinning backfist, because we are being taught not to risk that open opportunity for counters, but we do have what is call a "back fist" or known as "avalanche punch"
Backfist (aka avalanche punch)
Target: opponent's face

Different from some other schools' usage, we don't side slap our opponent with backfist or do a spin, but simply backfist smash straight down into an opponent's face like an avalanche. It's usually use like this (right hand) down block incoming jab then (left hand) steals the jab and (right hand) backfist into opponent's face. So the power or the key comes from smashing the fist with your whole weight sink down. Ultimately, we have to train to drill a nail into the wood with this backfist punch.
And yes, it can be a KO move, depends on how you work on it.
