its like fencing minus the narrow bladed swords...... anyone?
well to be safe.... we use wooden replicas of the blades and then fight.... but still it hurts like hell if you get hit or lunged by the swords tho.....
we only do this if we are to lazy to go to the gym or head to pop's home island...

well, we use bamboo sword to pracice..... AND IT HURTS!!bamboo absorbs impact..... so it only leaves heavy welts......
but we use FULL thick replicas made of Narra, oakwood or any other strong wood......
oh btw.... yesterday i sustained a bokken hit to the side..... it even penetrated through the armor..... fuck iaido........ never saw it coming

well, it's not bamboo completely anyway. it's has steel inside to make it heavier

we use PURE 100% wood.....
EXAMPLES
BOKKEN
Spoiler:
a similar bokken made like this hit my right ribcage through the padding...
Spoiler:
i was made to carry a very heavy one like this and my opponent the wood version
LONGSWORD

THIS is what i was using.... its still so hard to swing using this.... although its not that bulky and i can easily defend but not attack quite well

Those type of bokken. Are shit. I literally broke one off at the hilt by practice swinging too hard in the air to many times. They are also incredibly light. I like using heavier weapons so when I pick up a lighter one I have more agility.
I use ColdSteel bokken. Polypolyethelene or some shit like that. Unbreakable. I have literally chipped driveways by swinging it at them. I have a long katana and a wakasashi ColdSteel bokken. They are not to be trifled with. if you get hit on the hands with one of these, gloves or no, you will most likely not be grabbing anything for a long while. Likewise, body short at full force with result in a broken rib or bruised bones. They can even hold their own against actual metal weapons as well. I used to practice everyday and spar at least twice a week but that stopped after junior year. I still pick it up and practice, just not everyday. Once of r twice a week.
I also fenced with sabers and sparred with actual katanas, but that really hurts like hell and I'm too cheap to buy padding. I never went to an actual dojo or anything. Just swords with my friends. It's not like it's not all out. I've been laid up for a week or more from injuries from bokken and sword and whatnot.
Lately I've been focusing on more weaponless martial arts. It's more likely that I will not be carrying around a sword or bokken if I need to suddenly fight. Better to be prepared for situation I will have a higher probability of encountering.

technically.... its called a waster..... the reason why yours probably broke is because of the wood.... i had to use very thick and heavy ones to increase strength.... much like a claymore/zweihander longsword type..... its that or the fuckin' saburito which is like nearly the size of a nodachi (and damn heavy too)...
we also practiced real blades.... and our only armor is a roman legionary style armor with leather interiors lined so that any slash will not penetrate.... of course theres no lunging or we would have died practicing....
the gladius is also fine..... as of the moment i'm practicing the gurkha kukri knife....
