One great advantage is that any skills that you learn, even if they're applicable to civilian life, are generally ignored by employers.

There is the chance to travel. as a bulletsponge marine, you will get to see new places, and then blow them up. meet new people, and then try to kill them before they kill you.
every former marine i've ever known, ranging from viet nam era, to present day, have been a whiney little bitch after the got out. all they ever did was QQ about every little thing that didn't go their way.

Benefits:You get to play with guns
Kill people
The only fields where that type of "job experience" is applicable are either illegal, or government controlled. Those types of jobs might pay well, but you have to be really good with guns and/or killing people to even be considered.

Some of the benefits of joining the Marine corp include...
Early retirement, plenty of combat and problem solving skills (from boot camp and on the field), and the most important benefit, honor, respect and knowing you did something monumental for your country.

^this.
But you're not the only one getting that idea, it crosses my mind regularly.
I've planned on doing it after I finish my studies, somewhere in 2017.
