Updating PS3

Okay, I need to update a ps3 that has an old version but the thing is, if i donwload the update through pc and i download the latest version from the playstation website and install via usb, will the update work?
In short, can I update a ps3 that has a version that is kind of old and missed several updates, and update it to the latest version that is hosted on the playstation website via usb? Will any errors occur if i update right away from that old version to the latest?
I just want to be as safe as possible.

The update should work just fine. I have a old PS3...close to first gen. (The fat one) I have never had a problem with updating. If you are really afraid of messing someting up, back up the PS3 first.http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/settings/backuputility.html Preform the update...if it fails...restore and try again...or not, It is up too you.
I would recomend getting the update from the Playstation Network. That way you know you are getting the latest one.

What im talking about is the system version, not the system model as to what you are reffering to the fat ps3. Im wondering if it will update just fine if the version of the ps3 i have is old somewhat around the 3.xx versions. I would want to know if i could make it 4.31 from an old version via usb update.
