What is this shit

Microsoft .NET Framework 4 (Web Installer)
Is it safe? Will this fuck up my machine?
I've had absolutely terrible luck and experiences with all forms of technology: viruses, hard drives failing, tonnes of data getting wiped, accounts hacked- you name it.
So what the hell is this- what does it do- should I install it, and if it's useless, will I be able to uninstall it.

I honestly have no idea what it is, but it's required when installing/using certain programs, some games, and stuff so I installed it. It's safe and it's good to have.

It's legitimate if that's what you're asking.

I remember back to when I had my first PC.
Google'd around if uninstalling net framework would hurt me, nothing happened except that I booted up faster.
Could have been coincidence but. . . ever since than, I've been a happy camper with my updates AND firewalls turned off. Never had problems again, hope this helps you too!

Well, your credit card info will be stolen if you continue like that.

When a guy writes a program in C-sharp he might use some stuff that's contained in that .NET framework to actually perform stuff in his program. Yea, it's safe.

The dot-NET framework is Microsoft's take on a Java like high level language. If they were less anal about it, it could even be multi-platform like Java. Many programs written today for the Windows platform use the dot-NET framework, in fact it's been pre-installed in MS machines ever since Windows Vista.
...so, no it's legitimate and won't do anything bad to your computer.

Assuming you didn't download the installer from some really dodgy website, it should be legit (if you want to be 100% sure, download it from Microsoft's website).
It would be useless in pretty much the same way an unused USB port would. It doesn't do anything per se, but it enables you to run applications which utilize .NET. Considering that there are quite a few of those, you're almost guaranteed to need it eventually so it's more difficult to find a reason not to have it installed. Might as well do it.
It's not as straightforward as uninstalling other programs, but it can be done.

So do I only need the latest .net installed, or is it like DirectX where I should have 9,10 and 11?

So do I only need the latest .net installed, or is it like DirectX where I should have 9,10 and 11?You would need multiple versions of .Net if you find an application that uses an older version, but only to the major versions(First number is major version; 4.5 can run something that needs 4.0, but not 3.0). And if you want to use 3.5 you have to have 3.0 SP2 and 2.0 SP2 installed.
But you really don't have to bother if you don't find anything that doesn't uses those particular versions (and they're not that hard to find if you did).
@Pumpjack: Just get it; eventually, any average user will find something that needs it, so you might as well.

Just because nothing looks wrong doesn't mean nothing is wrong; not all malware is obvious (that's why we use virus scanners in the first place, dear).

HAHA.
Internet anonymity FTW!
But nothing should fuck up when installing it.
