Why do people on the internet do it?

Text-speak (also known nowadays as Internet-speak). Why do people use it?
Text speak originated from shorthand in text messages because, especially in the early 90's, typing a full sentence proved to be a bit of a chore because of the way keypads were laid out. But now that we have computers (which were also around in the 90's) and phones with QWERTY keypads with auto-correct, why do people continue to use it on the Internet? Go on Habbo Hotel for 5 minutes and you'll see what I mean.
Let me quote something off Facebook to give you a rough idea of what I'm getting at;
Just, WHY?!

Speed and ease of use. It's also the "hip" thing to do among kids. Youth culture and all that. /thread

I always thought it was not needed. It just annoys me when people do it now, though. I still see it happen on Facebook, Habbo Hotel, Gaia, etc, etc sadly. Most of the people who do it still are either lazy, don't want to type full words, or do not know English well.

Finally, someone who actually agrees how retarded text speak is. I can't be bothered to type to people who type to me like that, it's as if they are limited in what they can say or they are just too lazy.
I'm not sure if anyone else has seen this but it pisses me off when people cannot be bothered to type the word, for example, "you" and replace it with "u", yet they can be bothered to add extra unnecessary letters to other words e.g. "I knowwww" to try and seem cute. Of course this may be used for emphasis like "ohhhh myy godddddd", but it's when it is done unnecessarily on most words when it annoys me.
I always type full online and in texts on the phone, which usually results in me not being able to write enough when I'm texting someone so I have to shorten some words.

[size=12]despite the claim that it is faster and easier to do, i find that the times i have made myself type like that (for amusement at seeing my friends cringe) it actually took a lot longer because my fingers kept wanting to type the full words. ||OTL[/h]

Proper English is a must, even thou I am terrible at using proper grammar and spelling at least make a decent effort, please, just for me. Also when people actually talk like that, saying things like "lawl" in a real conversation, I find quite annoying; even thou I do it sometimes for shits and giggles but I digress.

Well, I'll admit I'm guilty of it occasionally but I don't do it to a point where you can barely understand what I'm saying. When in SD or while debating a topic with someone, I try to use proper English just so I don't get attacked by the grammar Nazi's who somehow think a misspelled word makes your argument irrelevant.

Most common answer: "It's faster".
...Because you have such urgent business on the interwebz?
What could you possibly need to do, that you have just barely enough time to log on, but not enough time to type out your sentences properly?

I absolutely hate it, and I'm glad I'm not the only one. my friends do that all the time, and I'm the one that's weird for talking normal
The only time I type like that is when I would literally say it like that in a conversation, such as
cuz
'till
somethin'

I can't stand it either, their's a reason that we're taught proper english. I always write out words completly and in full sentences when I write online.

In many cases, like using "u" instead of "you", "ppl" instead of "people", "cuz" instead of "because", its faster and convenient. We aren't talking about business emails or texts. We're talking about personal texts or emails or tweets. So why the fuck should they be held to the same standard? Grammar Nazis at their worst, I swear.

Grammar Nazis at their worst, I swear. But it's still not proper English, it's not how we were brought up to spell like. For instance, in my case, I find it faster to type properly. I've actually tried typing in Internetspeak and found it takes far more effort trying shorten words for convenience. Maybe it's something you get used to? I don't know. It might be faster for some people, but why the rush to get your thoughts out to the person on the other end?
True that there's no real reason to type properly if there's no work obligation or formal reqirement, but "dumbing down" the English language for the sake of conveniance will eventually turn ALL OUR BRAINS TO MUSH!!
Okay not quite.

Because, sadly, there is no mandatory spell check or grammar check for the web.
And because some people don't feel it's worth the effort. Which makes me die a little inside.
