Why do people praise the gangster illusion?
0
I listen to rap, its a given - given where I grew up.
But none of this I get cars money hos or clothes crap, I prefer my music with substance. (such as lowkey or lupe fiasco or kid cudi)
Let's praise the gangster illusion on television so that kids want to be gangsters, some do.
Let's say one of those kids became a "balla" and started buy rockawear en mass.
Now let's say there's thousand like him.
And they're all buying rockawear, clothing made by sweat shop kids in countries overseas.
People wonder why I always say I'm surrounded by evil, even though I left the hood.
I see beyond the looking glass.

I wasn't only talking about the television, I was also talking about white suburban kids who think its cool.
And kids in the ghetto wondering where the next meal will come from.

Okay, what? Are you high again?
And some kids just like the look or the style. Not everyone is going to watch a music video, then go rob and shoot people.
So what if there are thousands wearing that Rocawear? Then you just need to be different.

It's not hard to understand what he/she is talking about since our society does tend to almost glorify or idolize gangsters. Whether it's the mob or if it's gangster rappers in movies, television, video games and music. People around the world are influenced by the gangster/mob culture. There are also idiots out there that do try to mimic gangsters, which has happened with a group of kids trying to copy grand theft auto.
Edit: I understand why people are having a hard time understanding him.

If the only thing a kid gets from gangsta/mainstream rap is a fondness for Rocawear brand clothing, then i think they're doing alright. Honestly, there are a whole lot more questionable things that in mainstream rap
Also, Rocawear is not the only company that uses sweatshops. Not sure why they are singling out them for it

You say this, as I notice (judging from what you've posted) one of your favorite music genres is rap...

Yeah, but mobsters from the prohibition era were well liked by the people, unless the people got in the way of their business.

No one wears rockawear anymore, not even rappers.

You're obviously not seeing far enough. The world is filled with other "Gangsters" in the form of corrupt politicians/governments, interest groups, drug lords, and greedy CEO's.
What you're talking about is something that became profitable with the rise of Rap/Hip-Hop. It's only "praised" so they can sell shit, not because it represents something admirable.
And just because some music doesn't have, what you call, "substance" doesn't mean you should refrain from listening and enjoying it.

People on this thread seem to think I hate rape.
I only dislike mainstream rap.
I'm a fan of underground rap such as Lowkey.
Lyrics - My Soul by Lowkey
They can't use my music to advertise for Coca Cola
They can't use my music to advertise for Motorola
They can't use my music to advertise for anything
The truth, I guess that's the reason the industry won't let me in
Refuse to be a product or brand, I'm human
Refuse to contribute to the gangster Illusion
Whether I'm number One, Number two, or Number Three
I'm unique and there will never be another me
And there will never be another you
Be proud of who you are, don't copy what the others do
They are not superior, you are not inferior
When we realize that is gonna be hysteria
Not commercial, always controversial what my pen has written
When they listen many have risen from the mental prison
That's why you don't see my face upon the television
But every time I try to sleep I hear the devil singing

YOU SHOULD!
In seriousness, I'm not saying you hate rap.
All I'm saying that just because it is popular and has no substance in the lyrics doesn't mean you should refrain from enjoying it. Some people like listening to that because they're in a "silly" mood. Not everything has to be deep (that's why it's entertainment).
