i need to get hold of windows XP professional service pack 2 from microsoft yet i cant access their website..is there something wrong with my browser or anything?

You should still have it on your computer
If not go to control panel > add or remove programs
Once that is up on the left hand side is Add or remove windows components
check the Internet explorer and let it load (you may need your original disk
then click on the IE icon and bring up explorer
You should be able to access the update by typing "Microsoft update" in the search line
Be sure you select the actual Microsoft.com link not someone who will offer to sell you the update

there your problem, 95% microsoft site only can used with IE. or use the update in the control panel.
