Do you make your own luck?
0
I used to be very pessimistic before college. I was the emo. I was the guy that bitches about everything and perceive the world as full of hate. But then a wonderful thing happened to my life that made me a new man. Since then the world was full of happiness that i never noticed. I became the guy that makes everyone laugh and parties every weekend. I am optimistic and love the way I am. Ever since then I felt i became lucky. My test scores jumped, my essay's became easier, everything in life just... worked out.
Since then my quote became, "You make your own luck". Alot of my friends disagree with that. They claim there is no luck but only harsh reality. I disagree. I think how you perceive your world determines your luck.
Are you lucky?

Well, I don't believe in luck, but I tend to have a more positive or relaxed outlook and things just tend to go my way.

Luck is getting or experiencing something (good) by pure chance. Per definition, luck can't be influenced. It either happens or not.
What you experienced is a change of perception and motivation. No matter what happens to you, you perceive it as a positive experience. Even chores you perceive as something incredibly good, therefore it makes them easier for you. Like learning for exams or writing essays.
The same chores are for someone with a pessimistic attitude about it very hard to do.
The only thing you got lucky about, was the thing that happened to you changed your point of view that easily. Some people have to work for years to accomplish the same thing.

littleRED is right about that... I experienced the same thing and my vision of how I see things changed....
Good luck really does come by chance and bad luck are the ones who give it to you.

I do believe in luck to some extent, however I feel that luck depends on how you stack the deck. Keep positive, do healthy things, luck just seems to follow. Same to the inverse of that clause.

It depends on what you define as luck. Is it the randomness of events, or the effects of choices or situation?
This is what I mean-
Randomness of events: You are walking in the city and a 100 dollar bill floats by in front of you.
That was good luck, but you didn't do anything to influence it. This type is very hard to make- hence the randomness.
Effects of choices or situations:
You stop to help a lady pick up dropped papers on the street. Later you find out that she is the new vice-president of your job. You just created yourself a lucky situation- you went out of your way to be kind and she is grateful. You will most likely benefit in your job, now.
Or even your luck. You changed your outlook and everything became brighter as result. Things that happened were perceived a good luck.
You created your own luck- if you had not changed none of it may have happened.
-Sorry for my rant. Your question just got me thinking on luck and the different types.

Luck has nothing to do with it, if things are going shit for you. IT IS YOU making it shit for yourself, all you merely did was wake up and realize that you had to get up and say "hey what the hell am i doing sulking?"
Whingy people get nowhere in life, people who move their own wieght and prove that they are worthy are the ones that succeed. There is no luck in that, only effort.

I thought luck was all about the things we can't control. Keeping that in mind, you can't really say you make your own luck, can you? It'd be like betting with a loaded die.

Thnx for the input. Yes you guys are all right. It all depends on how you view the events around you. But I think "you make your own luck" means that luck comes to you because of how you react. Also its partially because you do things that leads to good outcomes? I think I'm drunk but I hope you get the idea.

Luck for me is something good happened by pure coincidence, I did nothing at all to change it nor to make it happen.
You can't do anything about it, since it happened because of coincidence, even though you can be a factor..
