Dreams Are Our Reality
0
Oh gawd, fucking reminding me of René Descartes.
Nobody knows if the reality, the way we see it, actually exists. It's that old René Descartes thing where we can only be sure of our own existence: "Cogito ergo sum", I think, therefore I am. But, just because we can't be 100% sure, doesn't mean it isn't our reality. There's really no compelling reason to dismiss our own reality as fake, so it's just better to assume this is reality, and our dreams are just dreams.
P.S., Déjà vu is just a common psychological phenomena. Nothing special.

As in, it unfolds in front you, triggering memory recycling. You talking about the claim that we have universal knowledge inside us, but we just don't remember/know about it?
I have yet to see good evidence for such an assertion.

The one what we accept the reality is a reality ... it depends to the person who have that way of thinking ..
you can call your dream is a reality if you want .. people may not accept it 100% but as long as you (the one who have that theory) think it is a reality, then it shall be legit .. even it just for you ..
and about deja vu ,
it's just another psychological phenomena .. just like what rbz said ... nothing special

you know, it seems kinda ugly to me when people use such relativist-like excuse to get away from trying to justify their belief... especially in cases where a justification is really important.
well, not that I'm saying this is one such case. my opinion on this "brain in teh lab" hypothetical situation is similar to rbz's. I can't be sure that this is indeed reality, but I have no strong reason to dismiss it either.

On the topic of deja vu:
A deja vu is basically the phenomenon that occurs when your subconscious manages to save a memory in your brain before your conscious gets around to processing it.
Heres an analogy: You can think of it like two processors on a computer both talking to the same camera. One is set up to check your hard drive for pictures that are similar to those currently coming from the camera, and the other one is set up to save pictures coming from the camera. In the case of a deja vu, the second processor is working faster than the first one, so that when the first one gets around to checking the hard drive it will find a perfect match every time.
Bottom line: deja vu is explained by neurology, nothing mystical or spiritual going on here, move along.

I tend to doubt reality a bit now and then, I usually go with long periods of not sleeping so when I eventually do I sleep for hours and always have a lot of intense dreaming.
Recently I experienced but rather oddly in the dream I got confused, I was starting to realize it was all a dream, but what was happening ni the dream I wished to be real, started telling myself it was reality, as I told myself this the dream became more and more vibrant, I could feel coldness, the area I was in become clearer (my dreams are usually rather clouded.)
Was a very odd dream-experience, perhaps I was going a bit lucid which would explain the weirdness, it's just the fact I could feel temperature struck me the most since my dreams usually only involve sight and hearing.
I suppose you could argue we all have our own reality and it's all down to our own perception.

Perhaps I simply have less vivid dreams than all of you, but whenever I do remember my dreams (which isn't often) it is very apparent to me what was a dream and what wasn't. I really only remember dreams when I am almost awake anyway, and by that point I can basically consciously control the direction of the dream without much trouble.
Suffice to say, its been a very long time indeed since I have had a dream that I remembered that I disliked.

Never dream anymore...
Though for me reality is what I see...
So for me whether it is a dream or when I wake up...
It is a reality

I see what you mean, alot of my dreams used to occur in real places and had people i knew in them and they seemed quite rational, hard to tell from reality.
But then again i've had plenty of weird ones with giant cartoon spiders and lava monsters too.
But as i got older i managed to control my dreams, so if i think or say i want something to happen it happens, also i never feal real pain in dreams (and i doubt anyone else does), but i can taste in dreams so its very mixed and weird, i got given this tea in a dream and it was so disgusting!
Dreams are semi-real but they will never be true reality with all the senses involved, you can tell there are two types of consciousness but whos to say which is real and which is not?

Well some people have a denial of reality.
From my standpoint, this world is really the reality although some people denies it for some particular reasons.

I believe this is reality because above all else my existence here is confirmed more so than it is in my dreams. Truly, it is "I think, therefore you are." Why? Because without another being there to confirm your place in the world, without someone there to recognize you and tell you, "you exist" (albeit in a far more subtle way), can you truly say you exist at all? Without others, there is no meaning in your life, nothing to live for or move towards to, as even betterment of yourself would mean nothing without someone there to recognize it.
I believe Deja'vu is when the image in front of you is taken into your brain and stored into your memory before you mind processes it. This explains the awkward feeling you get when it seems as if you have already experienced the moment at hand before. Wikipedia has a fully cited article explaining how this would happen along with a few scientific studies as well. This has not been proven however; but it is the best theory I have seen so far.

I suppose that if dreams were "the reality" then our dreams would have some sort of pattern to them, which would be continuous for your whole life (rather than having similar dreams fro 3-6 months and then having something different). And there's also the case of people who don't dream, or at very least never recall their dreams. Who would they be? Dead people? Ghosts? Gods?

Nice standpoint. Just wanna where everbody stands. I thought Deja Vu wasn't a psychological phenomena since , expressions, time, people and events are reminiscent in time x time format. As in, it unfolds in front you, triggering memory recycling.
There are many explanations that people use to describe deja vu, but some theorize that your brain is just fucking with you by having mental brain farts or associating random images to produce a similar outcome and makes you feel it's related to you.
Reality is just a concept that everyone shares and feel it exists, if something that happens only around you then you must be either be dreaming or suffering schizophrenia.

This subject reminds me of a book that I read not long ago in which the main character talks about reality with Satan. I'll just post that certain part here. If you wanna read it go ahead. I thought it was pretty interesting.

Rbz sometimes says exactly what I wanted to word for word. To point out the most important part though:

Take the bottom excerpt from scientists standpoint. Spoiler:
It leaves me wondering how did they come up with a stupid hypothesis.
To be honest, if this is the general theory, I am willing to believe it. It does make quite a bit of sense, I regularly dream about things that happened during the previous day/week/month. I suppose it would also be due to the phases your body goes through as it sleeps, such as the sleep-cycle, REM Sleep cycle and Deep sleep cycle. You only actually dream during the REM cycle, which is usually around 2-3 hours long. As your body comes out of deep sleep, it yet again goes into another REM cycle that is a bit shorter. While you sleep. particularly during the deep-sleep and REM cycles, your body uses nutrients and repairs itself, it would only make sense that it reflects on what it has stored in it's memory for that day.
I for one believe your dreams are very instinctive and do actually use your memories as material to fuel them. Much of what I've found in dreams are that they almost always have some sort of meaning, which would only further be validated by the fact that my brain is deciphering what it has learned during that day.
It also explains why people suffering Post Traumatic Stress Disorder dream of their terrible experience almost if not every single night. If your mind simply creates images by rapidly moving it's eyes out of thin air, why do some people have recurring nightmares all of the time? They would almost indefinitely have to be kept within the brains memory in order to do that.
The people who come up with these theories usually have actual some amount of evidence to found it on, so I would not simply throw their theories away, especially when none of you have done any tests of your own so far.
