Just how stuck in the past can we get?

I killed your family, raped your girlfriend, stole your money. It is all in the past though, get over it.
Is that what you suggest, but on a international level? Bombed your home, killed your family, destroyed your economy, enslaved your people, denied you rights - but you know what? it was in the past so lets get over it?
I think you simply long that the world could start over on a clean slate without all the problems it currently has - that'd be great. However, everyone can't just gather together in one little corner of the planet, wait for someone to shout "Go!", and we all run off to start the world anew.
Besides that, people move on more than you give them credit for. Only 60 years ago the USA and Japan fought on the the biggest wars the world ever has ever seen. Now the culturals of both countries have spread to one another and the people are enthralled with each other's products and ideas.

World is a sum of consequences of the choices we make. A lot of what we decide is influenced by consequences of those decisions, and our new decisions will influence next decisions and so forth. So it's logical that the past plays a significant role in our decision-making.
And I suppose that people feel comfortable when the have their previous experiences back them up. For example, if you found strawberries tasty, you will be (presumably) more likely to choose strawberry-flavored ice cream. If a certain person or nation had done something bad to you in the past (killed your family, your hamster, raped your girlfriend routine) then you won't trust them too much, right?
Of course, it's not healthy to keep stuck in the past, and remembering/bringing up thinks that are decades, or even centuries old, but so is just ignoring all of them.

Ten words"Those who don't learn from history tend to repeat it"
That^
Also are actions will affect future generations of people, so logically other people in the past actions affected us as well. It might seem like a difficult and in some ways obsolete world .... but dont give up.^_^
