Pale Blue Dot
1
I just watched Carl Sagan's speech on the pale blue dot and was both awed and inspired. I want to know what others feel about this video. Do you agree or disagree with it? What thoughts do it provoke for you? Or you could just discuss the issues presented in the video either way, I want to know what you guys think.
Here's the video.

Thoughts/words provoked by the video
That is an awe-inspiring video, but kinda bitter-sweet too. It makes me think a lot about life in general and my own life (the position I'm in, aspirations, my relationships with others, and so on).
The whole concept of our insignificance—when compared to the universe around us—is pretty interesting and seems like a pretty strong point (when trying to convey a certain message). As far as I know we only live once and it's a life where people tend to kill one another and spend time fighting over such trivial things, when we could be cherishing our one life and spending it in a better way. That aside, despite all the flaws of the world—the fighting, the killing, and so on—I kind of appreciate life and I value it a lot. Doesn't really matter how hard or tough it becomes, because to whatever extent... it's valuable and definitely worth treasuring.
Sadly, our small little lives, our relationships with people, our goals, our desires, our accomplishments and all else... end eventually. We die. It doesn't matter to me that everything that we do is small and insignificant though, but that they all end eventually. Makes me realize just how much I want to hold onto my life, despite all the crap.
Beautiful music in the vid, by the way.

I heard the story of Carl Sagan convincing NASA to turn voyager around and take that photo of earth as an insignificant spec in the universe. Man was one of a kind.

Yeah, Carl Sagan was a BAMF to say the least. This speech is one of his best, and the video really complements it. I learned about Sagan from the Symphony of Science videos someone put up on youtube, and have been an admirer ever since. RIP, you will be missed.

Its depressing, cause it reminds me how humanity is completely fucked unless we change our god damn attitude.
Also, it reminds me of this video...
its a little silly, but its also amazingly true.

Being the stickler that I am, I laughed at the ancient greek philosopher assertion.[size=10][Also, my cameo appearance at 2:31 is awesome.][/h]
None the less, I'm "more or less" completely agreed with Sagan there, although my opinion goes perhaps a bit beyond what is being outlined in the video - my views having been shaped by Barbusse/Feuerbach instead of Sagan.
The question is what you make of it. In my view, the insignificance of the human species compared to the entirety of the universe is in itself insignificant to us. To us (humans), the human species is quite rightly the predominant issue in the universe.

I understand and agree with that statement to an extent (i think the earth at large is more significant then just the human species), but i wouldn't use the term "predominant issue in the universe." but rather the predominant issue in our immediate awareness or immediate consciousness.

In a way it is sad, but I really do not care about the bigger picture that humans fit into in relation to the universe.
I do not see why I should care, all I really care about is me:
I want to grow old
I want to be successful
I want to be happy
I want to get laid
I want to find the woman of my dreams
I short, the only thing this short film reminded me of was that all I really care about is ME.
