Social security for the jobless
0
(USA)I just had a conversation with a relative and I found out that if you have enough kids and you and your wife are jobless or earn less than $800 you can get almost $2000 from the government and this does not include FREE medical, dental and vision insurance for ALL of you and not including FREE 2-BEDROOM APARTMENT and this will last until your kids reach 18. I mean god!
I work my ass off and these people almost get more than me if youd total all of that off, for doing NOTHING but partying at home for merely having kids and being jobless???
Do you think this is fair?
And Ive heard from others as well that certain groups here in CA actually deliberately do nothing but that and abuse the system and choose not to work.
are we supporting these people?...

Good luck living off 2000 a month with bills, taxes, and feeding the kids. I don't really support social security unless you've worked all your life for it. I do however think that all military personal should get more money then civilians when the get older.
Or you can be like my grandpa and join the military retire 20 years later but also become a psychologist in that time and then get 1 job at one prison as a prison psychologist retire and go to work again retiring yet again. My grandpa now collects 3 retirement checks and social security.

$2000/month is not a lot of money for an entire family. I can barely make due with $1700/month and that's just living by myself. Eating Kraft dinner everyday and doing the majority of your shopping at Sally An is no way to live. Unless you're a college student or Indie. Even if they don't have to pay rent, feeding a family is not an easy task.
I can't say I'm alright with people abusing the system but this is also there for the families that actually need the money in order to survive.

i guess it is tougher for the military, considering they have to survive long enough to retire. i wonder how cops fare off in that sense too, i think at times theyre more in danger than base stationed soldiers.
i know one of these and theyre not struggling at all. i mean they can party and drink, they got video games(more than me) and theyve all the leisure i have - its normal living(unless im actually living a struggling life ehm...). i think if youd just budget it you can do a lot with it. i mean i think i can live just fine with that much if youd take away rent, insurance and of course work expense like gas and is that aid taxed? and, the more kids you have the more you actually get
my food consumption for a month is $200. well i eat popcorn for lunch, breakfast and dinner or $1 microwave dinners(which really taste nice) and vitamin supplements only cost about $6 a month or two? i can switch to cooking too and itd be around the same
i think the intention for the system is for those who are really struggling and not those who pretend to be for the free help. i think itd be odd for an able bodied/minded person not to be capable of finding a job for 5 years. i mean i dont mind the helpless being helped, i think they should be helped seriously
its good coz if ever itll happen to you theres that thing to catch you.
i guess it hurts no one since the government can afford it?

I'd like to see some citation other than second hand word of mouth.
Social security is only supposed to pay what you put into it. i got a statement from SS that said i only have about $1k coming. that's becuse most of my income has been under the table. i haven't had a taxable job in over five years, but i never went for welfare or unemployment. so i don't know for sure.
as for welfare, it only lasts for five years, then you get cut off. i think it's the same with unemployment.
just saying, i heard different, but i have no citation either. just second hand word of mouth that was different.
i don't even know where to look to find the info. and honestly, i'm too lazy to look.

Don't think so. Otherwise, most countries wouldn't hear about this "National Debt" guy. Or not as much as usual. The more developed the social care, the bigger the administration running them, ergo the costs increase, not to mention the money that is distributed to the needing ones.
Social care can, or rather it is, something of a double-edged sword. For one part, it is necessary, because there are many people genuinely in need of assistance, and otherwise wouldn't be able to make their ends meet. But on the other side, a well developed welfare system can encourage the more lazy of society to just give up on working (or looking for some) and just leech off the money. And the more money you can get that way, the more lazy people can be expected to do this sort of thing. I have heard the stories of homeless/jobless who would just settle on social care and leave it at that because it was "convenient" for them.
But again, you can't just cut the system, because as I said, some people really need help, and they shouldn't suffer because of arrogant, selfish pricks.
There is no perfect answer, and no perfect system.
Just throwing in my two pennies, for over the ocean.

Shag, sorry if the title was misleading(I couldnt think of what to call it) honestly I dont know what its called just that you can get money from the government. The housing thing though is called section 8 or 9 I think. you get them from different agencies I think but they all amount to somewhere near that amount or more its almost exactly like what developmentally disabled people get(mentally retarded and the like)
Hey, arent you shaggy???
I heard unemployment sorta actually comes from the employer that laid you off, also thats info from other people I know who actually got laid off and is living off it sorta - just ehm slacking off, no idea how much though.
Room101, well yeah I agree with what you said. It wouldve been good if they can be screened or even checked somehow. But I guess realistically too, that would cost human labor to do the checking.
I guess its better to have it than nothing at all like in some countries. I just hope we are helping more people in real need hihihihi.

This makes me lol. For starters the government doesn't pay for shit around here. Yeah you see in the news a bunch of crap on government spending. They aren't spending their money though. They're spending our tax dollars. All social security benefits come from other Americans and ones own pay check. Not the gov't.

long, not sure if i got the right word but it was ehm an attempt on sarcasm hohohohoho. what you said is true, what the government does is funded by us its the hundreds of bucks that get deducted on our wages that pay for these things.
oh yeah vitale, I just found some other frozen food at Ralphs for $1, forgot the name but theyre in red boxes - salisbury steak and other stuff

2000$ dollars a month isn't enough to pay bills a sustain a family. And its not like these family's purposely take advantage of the "system". You can't just tell them "hey you, get a job" because unemployment is at what 9%?, maybe higher. People are spending less more jobs are lost and then the cycle continues.
P.s I'm sure those who are "abusing" the system would love to make their own wages because they would make more, therefore spend more which helps the economy.(which makes more jobs)
P.s.s Also yes i now there will be some who do abuse the system but lets not put them all in the same group.

Section 9. that's the housing one. i couldn't think of it either until you said it. section 8 is what klinger was aiming for on M*A*S*H. :P
unemployment only works if you have a job that pays into it. kind of like SS. i never had a job that paid into it. so i can't get it. also, you have to lose your job "through no fault of your own", meaning if you're a fuck up they don't have to pay you off.

Kay, some people actually need the welfare and the public housing.
But then there are those who abuse the system, badly. I know people here in Canada who are quite rich (more money than me anyways, 2 cars, big house) but somehow have managed to swindle there way into getting welfare (they are paid by cash for their work so no tax) and a place in a public housing complex even though they own a home under someone elses name (probably family) which they then use to rent out to people for more income.
I mean that's just being greedy. Wish there was a way to better monitor this. I don't want my tax dollars going to these cons.
