Tribute to Knut and A Question about Animals in Captivity
0
I am not sure if any member on Fakku knows of Knut. The polar bear supposedly shot to fame with its cute looks during its younger days, when it was abandoned by its mother. In any case, I was flipping through the papers recently and realized that Knut has recently passed away. The following would be an online article from Yahoo News:
I remember being captivated by Knut's cute looks during its younger days, but I never had a chance to visit the Berlin Zoo. Personally, I would think all the limelight and stress may have caused the early death of Knut.
Last but not least, two images of Knut as a cub:

Hopefully, my fellow bear has gone to a better place.
On that note, some people have argued and petitioned for wild animals not to be kept in captivity, while others proclaim that zoos and aquariums are alternate ways to conserve and study nature. Which camp are you on?
P.S. Some may not consider this to be the most important piece of news in the world, so I reckon Random would be an appropriate location for this thread.

Nooooo~!
I think he had problems since he never had a mother bear to raise him. He probably didn't understand his place in bear society or what his purpose was. :\
Maybe that is why he attacked every female he came across instead of trying to mate with them.

So the bear had social issues? Maybe this is a case of suicide, then.

My condolences to your fellow bear, Gambler. He passed away too soon. RIP Knut.
Regarding your question about animal captivity, I have to say I'm with the second camp. As humans, it is in our nature to be inquisitive of things we do not comprehend. Establishing zoos and aquariums is one of our ways to try and understand the workings of nature in a safe environment, because the need to survive is also an inherent trait humans have.

Which camp are you on?I HATE the zoo. ever notice how some of the animals just pace back and forth all day? they do that because they are used to having space to roam and be free, and now they can only barely move. i think after a while, they start to go a little stir crazy.
the study/preserve arguments are BS. zoos and aquariums* are buisinesses.
i'm far from some animal rights peta nutjob, but i have been to jail and know a little of what it's like to be locked in a confined space with nothing to do all day.
*[size=10]there are some exceptions, the monterey bay aquarium is about research, but places like sea world are about exploitation for profit.[/h]

"proclaim that zoos and aquariums are alternate ways to conserve and study nature. Which camp are you on?"
BWHAHAHA.
yeah okay study them if their unnatural habitat, that'll do a lot. Perhaps they might find out if a polar bear likes bananas or not.

I don't know how something as vicious as a polar bear can look so damned cute

Awwww this calls for an adorable yet sad video
Also, I'm half and half on zoos and aquariums. I don't mind them when they're rescued animals - like at the Baltimore Aquarium in Maryland has this HUGE sea turtle that was injured and couldn't ever go back out to sea and be able to survive. He swims fine, but he doesn't swim fast etc.
I'm not fond of dolphin shows and whale shows, and everyone is always so surprised when a 'whale attacks' in a small captivity doing shows day in and day out.
But animal rescues I'm perfectly okay with. Knut's mother rejected him so Germany took it upon themselves to raise him. Knut couldn't have survived without people and was raised to love his owner as his own kind.
I'm really sad to see Knut go ):

Mod Note: Topic has been moved from Random to the Serious Discussions section, after speaking with another user on the issue.
Sorry for the inconvenience caused.
Getting back on topic about zoos and other places where animals are kept in captivity, they provide a safe haven for animals from poachers, hunters and the destruction of their natural habitats, albeit at the expense of their freedom. For some endangered species still living in the wild, they are supposedly protected by their governments, but illegal hunters and traders may still find a way to reach them.
Personally, I am caught between the issue as well. Perhaps for the smaller animals, such as certain species of birds and insects, zoos and other places of captivity may provide sufficient space for them to roam about freely. The same cannot be said of larger animals, including bears.
What then, are your opinions of nature/national parks, which are usually larger in size compared to zoos?

Although I understand the importance of trying to have some animals in captivity, sometimes things like Zoo's just don't seem right.

I'm actually for zoos, though it doesn't prepare animals for the wild. It does provide a specimen for study that has a significantly longer life span.
Also, I don't feel bad for an animal meant to kill everything dieing. Sure it was cute as a cub, but it would have eaten me if given the chance.

Damn that sucks for the polar bear. I did see an article on the internet but I never had a chance to read it. Can't save them all unfortunately.
