Dota vs LoL

Didn't play Dota, played League since it was out, so between the two, I'd have to say League. But I've played Dota2 for a few months, and if I this were a thread about Dota2 vs League, Dota2 would win every vote in every category from me, lol

Wait... I thought that Dota2 was not released yet... Have it?

Dota2 has been in beta for a while now. It's still invite only, but the game is very polished despite being in beta.

LoL is a childrens game. I played it a few times and it was easy mode, no challenge at all. Metagame and the tactics of the Dota professional scene make LoL's professional scene look like 3rd grade maths compared to calculus. I also disagree about HoN being a copy of dota2, i've spent 400+ hours in both and the games are far more different. HoN is more gank/fast paced than its dota counterpart.

The reality is that if you think LoL is a better game than dota then it's just because you suck.

Yet DoTa players who say this have shitty rankings on LoL. Problem?

That's because they don't waste their time trying to get up the ranks playing a noobs game like LoL.

Actually, it's because they're not just good at League, no matter how much they call it shit.

Woah there boys, put away the rulers and zip it up. The simple truth of the matter is that the only people who think League and Dota can't coexist are awful at one and only decent at the other. Anyone with a fair amount of skill can enjoy both games seeing as they were both created for DIFFERENT PURPOSES.

League of Legends was created to try to bridge the gap between the high skillcap + steep learning curve of Defense of the Ancients and the majority of online gamers who never tried or never got a chance to play DotA due to how closed minded its community was about new players. It was DESIGNED to be an easier game so as to attract new players to the genre, because HoN, for example, was also failing at getting new players interested in the genre due to more or less the same problem: a community of stuck up dickwads who were too busy inflating their e-peens to allow new players to learn a game in "their" game.

Dota2, meanwhile, was created to revive the high skillcap gameplay of DotA, but provide it with a much needed matchmaking system, along with automatic updates, central lobbies, and a team dedicated to maintaining the high quality that veteran DotA players and people relatively new to the genre a la League of Legends have come to deserve and expect.

The fact is, Dota2 wouldn't be as successful as it is now if League hadn't come around and introduced scores of new players to the MOBA genre, and League of Legends wouldn't exist in the first place had DotA not come before it. Both games are made by former developers of DotA. League has Guinsoo, and Dota2 has IceFrog. Guinsoo's with Riot, IceFrog is with Valve. Both got their roots in DotA, and both decided to approach its revival in different ways.

tl;dr Stop fighting over which game is better because DotA needed to exist for League to be made, and League needed to exist for Dota2 to be successful.

Oh boy here it is. Well...Dota is easier for the old diehard dota players to get into as it is mostly the same mechanics and characters it seems...

League to me feels like an updated version of that old idea to be less complicated, easier to pick up, but in no way simpler at high levels of play. There is a lot of countering that goes on in League and lots of different items, builds, choices of setup, ect.

To each their own. Some like DoTa some like League. I play league because it is the first moba I happened to start but...Either seems good, go play what you like. The criticisms that come from a DoTa > LoL player or LoL > DoTa player must always be taken with a grain of salt because you really need to play both to know the game. I've seem some outrageous claims about balance and such from both sides about the other game which I am pretty sure aren't true. I only know what I know about DoTa because a ton of my friends played it and explained it to me.

What you gave was full of insight and love for both games. But don't stop the war.

This is a thread that is allowed to debate with swearing or throwing your hat into the air or whatnot, as long as the argument contributes to the thread :D

I placed this thread here and not in Random for 2 reasons:

1.This is the video games section. Meaning I wanted people to argue with maturity and insight as to why their game is better than the other, or the middle, because they actually have knowledge of what they're talking about. If I placed it in Random, i'm sure more stupid replies will pIle up lile the ones above

2. I lied. There was no 2nd reason :3

Kinda forgot the thread was literally about "Dota vs LoL". I'm so used to seeing pointless arguments about this that I've developed the habit of squashing them whenever they show up.

Carry on, mentlegen.

Having played both games, I firmly disagree. League isn't easy in high level play, but it's easier than Dota. Easier by far. Counterpicking isn't unique to League, it's just a bigger deal because the laning phase lasts longer and is more predictable.

DotA has some really broken aspects to it
League tries to balance it's champs the most I think

No, please don't talk nonsense. Dota is the most balanced game of its genre.
And you're saying LoL is balanced? You're truly stupid if you think that.

Confirmed. It's gonna be free to play "with a twist"

There is no twist. LoL is free to play with a twist.

Imo denying (tower denying is cool though) is a silly mechanic which adds nothing to game other than making it longer.

Only makes it longer? Try proving true skill over your opponent. You're denying him farm and experience. Thus putting you in a huge advantage. Its a core mechanic of the genre and Riot were stupid for removing it.

I've played Dota since it first came out and I have been a "beta" tester in Dota1 for quite some time. LoL is a stupid comparison and I don't know why you even make a thread where people argue over the games. Both games have their fanboys and girls. But the truth is Dota is a far much better game. Its balanced, the draft is highly complex and the core gameplay is _FUN_. There are no broken features like AP.

If you've never played Dota2 you can buy it now from steam for 30€(Not sure in USD) or wait until the game officially comes out.

One more thing about the balance of the games. Riot is a HUGE company. While Icefrog and his team when they worked on Dota1 were only a small amount of people. And they managed to make a balanced game because... They listened to the community feedback! Something Riot hardly does.

LoL is a fun game to play casually, only for a few games though because sooner or later you'll get oneshot by a LeBlanc with 20AP when you have 80+ MR.

Dota 2 > Dota 1 in every aspect, other than the unreleased content. But personally I do enjoy the current game with limited hero cast.
LoL games is too casual compared to most dota games, no denying, etc. League players are ridiculed in dota 2 for a reason.

Shark was 16 year old pro in Broodwar.

Either way, my point still stands. Just because you call a game shit doesn't mean a thing. If DotA is so much more complex than League, why can't players function equally well in an environment with less complexity? This is where players spout excuses about their feelings and how they get violated by certain design philosophies.

I mean, yeah, we can argue forever about why you like a game better, but there's nothing in reality that indicates that people are legitimately stupid for subscribing to one game or the other.

The guy is Asian, so your point is invalid! /Asianjoke

But really, you made a valid point there.

Also, I detect a butthurt DotA/LoL fan that cannot take the pressure of this thread, so he took it out on me by shooting a neg rep (i'm positively sure it's a HoN fan, but you can't be too sure)
