Games for Windows Live will be shutdown July 1st, 2014. While it's nice that this thing will be gone, a lot of games may lose their playability or their online. Some people may also lose their save files as well since some games require the save to be stored on GFWL servers.
The only thing I will miss is being able to talk to friends while playing Dark Souls.

So they just brought over one of the lead guys who apparently made Steam what it is. So I'm thinking they are probably going to re-launch it to be a lot more competitive.

No, Gabe Newell is just the face of Valve. Jason Holtman is actually one of the behind the scenes minds of Steam, that is my understanding.

Shitty service was shitty. Good that they're finally shutting it down.
And now let's hope they won't pull another crap like this, Steam is enough.

Good Riddance. Everyone was pissed when Namco Bandai announced that Dark Souls was going to use GFWL. I for one was pissed when I had to register for it just to play Bioshock 2, even though I bought the game on Steam. The registration wouldn't even work while I was in the game client, and I had to register via the Live website for an Xbox Live account (as they are linked).
I hope I never have to do shit like that again and just have games that run of Steamworks.
