What makes a game for you?

I've always been asking this to people who play game avidly and people who are getting into the gaming scene. What is it that makes a game TRULY attract YOU as a player?
By that, I really mean, what aspects do you look for when choosing a game to play. What keeps you playing? Do you choose your game based on developer even?
P.S. If this has been asked already, shoot off my nuts.

A game to me is being a yellow ball eating mostly smaller yellow balls while being chased by ghosts. Then if you eat a smaller medium size ball you can eat ghosts. Through in some fruit for my character to eat and you have a game.

It has to be the setting and sounds.
For example, if it's a fantasy game, the monsters have to have intimidating sounds or looks, not simple fairy tale land crap. You have to fear their growls or they'll rip you apart without effort. If it's a game with firearms, the weapons have to have that oomph to them. So having huge explosions accompanied with an intimidating sound, chainguns that really sound that they will rip through anything and assault rifles that just sound strong are needed.
The levels have to be appealing in looks, they can't just be meshed together. There has to be some sort of beauty in them, from ruins to space ships. Their designs have to leave you wanting to explore. Not just one off it and make it look like a fun area, make it appealing.

I guess the same thing I look for in any other work of fiction
An engaging story and interesting characters.
Stuff like the Ultima games, shin megami tensei, xenogears, and growlanser.

Good gameplay, story comes second. Don't really care about graphics. If the soundtrack isn't to my liking, I just turn it off and play the radio.

Gameplay and story (if there is one) are important factors for me. I value them both equally. Graphics don't turn me away from a game unless they really interfere with the game like massive frame drops and slowdowns.

1st - It has to have an interesting story or plot, complex or dark even, but at the same time playing through the story/plot won't bore the player to death.
2nd - it must have gameplay that is enjoyable and befitting of the story/plot.
3rd - Somehow, somewhere, someway, no matter how complex or dark the story/plot will be, there will always be a time for a comedy skit. :D

Or of course the great game of all:
It needs to have a rectangled background and then blocks come down from the sky and you need to fit them into positions to end those blocks existence before they take over your rectangled world.

well, there are many aspects that makes me to love the game
- Storyline: Well, i guess that one i cant explain too much, cause every game will have a different story, but the story "flow" need to be good and not boring, the game need to give you story then stage story then stage, and story explanation is better when they use cutscenes, and npc talking shit when you interact like super nintendo final fantasy style.
- Characters: I hate when the protagonist is so fucking kind, it is boring so i hate kind protagonist, a good protagonist needs only to want to survive, antagonist need to be evil as hell, fuckin evil or crazy, like Kefka from ff, or sephiroth from ff too xD, they are good antagonists examples. Or a antagonist like Doom 1 antagonist, like spider mastermind shes creppy dude! i like that boss ^^
- Fun gameplay: Not a boring gameplay at all, like a doom gameplay, action and rpg elements, or castlevania symphony of the night gameplay, such a fun gameplay not boring and difficult, rpg battle needs strategy, not just atack then atack then potion then atack, thats boring. A good example of strategy on rpg battle is final fantasy tactics.
- Difficult: That one is very very very very important, sometimes it will piss you off but it worth when you beat the game ^^. I like when the game set difficult modes like Doom do, lv 1 dif lv 2 dif lv 3 dif, ultra violence then nightmare or like i wanna be the guy, multiples difficulty modes but the game is hard anyways hahahah

Graphics aren't important to me, but the astetic and world in which the game takes place is.
It needs to have charm for me.
I also don't like overly gritty realism unless the world it provides is unique
And challenge of all kinds is important too. Reflex, puzzles, exploration, plat forming, action, whatever challenges it gives it needs to be vaired enough to where it doesn't get boring.
And I always like a good puzzle game built around a simple mechanic that let's you do a lot with said mechanic or expands design aspects around said mechanic, rather than throwing a whole new one every level.

Honestly it depends on the genre and what the creators are setting out to accomplish. I like games with very in-depth combat, interesting game play mechanics, although there are some good narrative focused games out there.(there also simulators and sim-like games that can be enjoyable)
Video games just like any other medium is pretty broad.

Gameplay IS practically half the game. If its memorable, the game is twice as fun :D

Depends on the genre, ya goof. I just explained that not all games are trying to achieve the same thing. :D
That being said Super Smash Bros Melee is probably my favorite game, despite not being hard to control and understand, it can be pretty complex.(I also love CS:S and Quake 3, but those are a bit more hard to get into)

I dunno about all of you guys, but since I can get into practically any genre so long as it has a certain something to draw me in I think I can at least begin to explain it with these three points.
But that's just a few of the characteristics of games that I love and what it is that made me love them. There are still some things I just can't explain.
- Exploration and Discovery
The reason I love and shall forever remember Skies of Arcadia and LoZ: Wind Waker was just because so much time was spent rediscovering landmarks that were long forgotten by civilizations past, and reading their entries in my discovery log or just drawing my own conclusions. The theories surrounding their history and former purposes made me wish and hope that I could be a good fantasy writer. The Ghost Ship's map in Zelda and the Dark Rift of Skies of Arcadia stand out to me in particular. I've yet to find a game that has that little aspect within it (Seriously if someone has a game that also has that, please tell me).
- Sports with Cartoonish Rule Changes
Super Mario Strikers and its sequel are my favorite sports games because they are the only Soccer game where you're allowed to tackle the opposing team into an electric fence and light the goalie's hands on fire. It's difficult to the point of being unfair in Career mode, though.
- A Violently Destructive Journey Across the Contemporary World
I made America and Europe my bitch in Battletanx. There hasn't been a roadtrip across the US as memorable and remarkable that I've experienced since.
