[Locked] Atheism is not a religion

Ineed your guys help. I know I'm right, but the people I'm arguing with keep calling me uneducated for saying atheism is not a religion. Help me out here.

It's a religion. Religion is "a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, esp. when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs".
If you believe a God caused it, it's a religion. If you believe fuit caused it, it's a religion. If you believe nothing all-powerful caused it, it's still a religion. Nothing will change that.
If you believe a God caused it, it's a religion. If you believe fuit caused it, it's a religion. If you believe nothing all-powerful caused it, it's still a religion. Nothing will change that.

But if you don't believe ANYTHING caused it...that's just a complete lack of belief, hence it's not religion.

Atheism is not a fucking religion. Atheism is the lack of belief in deities. There is not "set beliefs". Just a lack of. Just because something is atheist, it doesn't automatically make them evolutionists either. Religion is the belief in and worship of a god or gods, or a set of beliefs concerning the origin and purpose of the universe.
See how I highlighted and? It means exactly that. Evolutionists might believe in Big Bang creating the universe, but that does not automatically mean that they believe in a purpose for the universe. Get it? Religion needs be a set of beliefs. Atheism is the lack of belief. Therefore, Atheism is not a religion. Ta-fucking-da.

Thanks lollercookies, I've been arguing with this guy for hours and he won't shut up about "Spiritual consequence" and...for some reason thinking that I'm only aruing this because somehow, being or not being a religion affects its credibility, and for some odd reason, I WANT Atheism to be more credible.

Atheism is not an organized religion.
Atheists themselves, have a personal religion though.
The fact that you believe in nothing means you believe in nothing. You still have a religion kiddo no matter how you want to slice it.

Isn't atheism the ABSENCE of religion? Not quite. There's numerous eastern religions where you can still hold an atheistic view of the world (Buddhism and so forth). I personally believe in the religion of kgods, a.k.a. consummate nihilism.

Well I'm agnostic. The argument I was having was whether atheism was a religion or not. Which, as we've seen, and as you say, it is not.

It's not an organized religion, no. But atheists all have a religion.
Pretty much the best way you can explain it. Though in truth terms, referring to yourself AS Atheist does designate that you are referring to yourself in a religious identity. As in the identity that you do not believe in deities.

But, by that logic, nothing's a religion. None of the other religions explain a purpose for the creation. They all say that it happened, and that's that. No reason, they were just bored one day.
I'm not saying their evolutionists, I'm saying that... ugh, I can't get to my point like that. New paragraph!
There's three types ofreligions. Monotheistic (belief in one god), Polytheistic (belief in many gods), and Non-Theistic (belief in no god). Non-Theistic is what really matters.
Non-Theistic is split into quite a few categories, "Strong Atheism", "Weak Athiesm", Agnostic (also strong and weak), and theological noncognitivists. Since we aren't talking about the rest, I'll just explain Strong and Weak Athiesm.
Strong Athiesm is the firm belief that there is no god. Weak Athiesm is the thought of a god not existing. Completely depending on which one you are, it answers the question of whather Athiesm is a religion or not.
tl;dr: 50/50.

I didn't say religion explains "why" the God did it. It's asking about the purpose of the universe after its creation. There's a difference.
The idea of strong or weak atheism is pointless. Regardless, Atheism as a whole is not a religion.

Not true my dear chap.
Atheism means you clear cut, don't believe in deities.
That is one definite answer you have for the universe.

Lol, atheism is definitely a religion! It is the believe in the deity Atheos, ruler of the satanic realms and arch enemy of Jesus. Or why else do you think the Atheists hate our lord Jesus Christ so much? Use your logic please! And if you don't believe me, ask our pastor!
xDDDDD
Now seriously:
Atheism means literally not believing in any God or Gods, and nothing else! The fact that someone is an Atheist tells you nothing about what his believes are, but what they are NOT!
Uneducated people tend to confuse Atheism with Scientific Naturalism, but those are 2 totally separated things! They were a lot of Philosophers that were Atheist, but did not believe in Scientific Naturalism either!

It's not an answer, it's a placeholder. These are people who have decided to stop guessing at god, and move on in their values. That doesn't mean that any proof otherwise won't make these guy s go, "Well...maybe..." and EVERY atheist has this particular idea.
I'm currently arguing with a guy who believes that one of the CORE BELEIFS of atheism is that is no afterlife. I pointed to Buddhists, who are atheistic, and he specifically stated, "Atheism is not buddhism." To which I responded, "...No...atheism is a PART of buddhism...they use Atheism's belief that there is no god, which is ALL it is, and move on from there to make their own thing." he's still arguing with me that atheism is the believe of TWO, not one, but TWO things, A) no god, B)No afterlife. I keep telling him there is nothing that says that, but he keeps saying, "I've asked atheists, and they don't believe in it." so yeah, we're continuing our debate because he is ADAMANMT that atheism is a religion, and will NOT let it go until he has, in his own words 'educated' me.

A definite answer is just a clear answer.
If you ask someone who is an atheist if they believe there is a god or not, they say no. If they don't say no, they are not an atheist they are agnostic in the very least. Which still has an answer.
That's how it is, there's no real saying otherwise you know.
As for not believing in an afterlife. No, being an atheist doesn't mean you don't believe in an afterlife.
Of course, it is very likely of a possibility though. But no, it's not a defining characteristic of atheism.
But like I said before. It's not really an organized religion. But it is something the is defined by a religious viewpoint. So it would be a sort of religion. Not like Christianity, or Islam and such since those are organized religion, but yeah.

Congrats guys you kept my interest until pg 1.5
Atheists do not believe in god hence no morality nor any consequences in an afterlife unless for some odd reason their into philosophy or ethics I don't see that ending well
agnostics are open to the idea of religion or god so they are a step above atheists
me? I'm wiccan I believe in many gods keeps me honest

You are wrong Kalistean, Atheism is not a religion, Atheists however can be religious.
Around 2.3% of the Earth's population describes itself as atheist, 11.9% is described as nonreligious1. Atheism is simply the belief that there is no god. If I believe that my laundry will dry faster if I put it in a dryer instead of hanging it on a clothesline, does that make it a religion? No. I myself am an Atheist Secular Humanist. My friend is an Atheist Buddhist. It is the term used to describe the belief that there is no supernatural power guiding us, nothing more, nothing less.
Edit: It was replaced with a better one it seems.
