FAKKU/Sanshee at Kawaii-Kon 2010!
1
I mentioned a few months ago that we would be attending Kawaii-Kon this year and with it a week away, I figure it's about time to give some more details. Like I said before we will have a booth in the artist alley, so if you are attending you should stop by and say hello. We are booth number 7.
This will probably be the only time we are in Hawaii for a convention, so this is your only chance to see us if you live out there. And I am going out a few days early so any suggestions on places to visit? I want to make the most out of this trip.
Honolulu, HI - April 16th - 18th

I suppose I will be the "token Hawaiian guy" and greet you with a lei when you get here. :DI completely approve of this idea. And since you live in Hawaii you should know that I am going out there a week early. What are some fun things I can do during that week?

If you guys decide to go Karaoke, I suggest "Krazy Karaoke". Just bring your own beer/food, pop it in the mini fridge and start singing.
Snorkeling
Bubbies - Mochi Icecream
Crack Seed Store
Lewers Lounge - cocktails (dress code though)
Go to a Luau
Surfing = North Shore
If you decide to go to a strip club, stay away from Femme Nu. They charge extra on tourists.

We got diddly squat to do around here. Just a bunch stuff to eat really...
Best thing a tourist can do is go sightseeing, granted even in that we don't got much. <.< Hate this island.

Almost everything suggested so far sounds fun, and I am all for sightseeing types of things since I have never been there before. Maybe some type of hiking could be done? I don't know, keep the suggestions coming!

The traditional and really the only hiking place on the tourist side of Oahu is Diamond Head and its a rather short hike. Other than that the only other sightseeing place I can think of is Hanauma bay granted you might wanna see if that's still open, I haven't been there to snorkel for years.
If you get some kind of tourist package they usually go to the PCP(Polynesian Cultural Center) which has some cool things here and there.

It might sound a tad weird, the island being only 30 miles long but even I haven't done everything, not that I would but since you're a tourist you might want to go to Hanauma Bay, go eat at an L & L drive in, Diamond Head, talk to tourists in Nihongo aka Japanese. (It helps that some islanders know basic phrases for lost tourists). You could also go to the beach and work on your tan or go on a glass-bottom boat ride, go to Pearl Harbor (Yeah, it's ironic that we get a lot of Japanese visiting Pearl Harbor. I really don't think most Americans visit the bomb sites when they visit Japan) I wouldn't suggest buying a hooker or going to the clubs though.
TL;DR
DOs
Hanauma Bay
North Shore
L & L Drive In
Diamond Head
Pearl Harbor
Dole Plantation (I don't know if it still has the world's largest maze)
Go to a Mall, pref Ala Moana
Sea Life Park or the aquarium
Drive around downtown, old architecture
Go to Waikiki or Ala Moana beach and check out the "view"
Drive up Tantalus during the day and look at the view
Travel in groups (Not saying it's a dangerous place but if you've never been there before you can't be too cautious)
DONTs
Pick up a hooker
Bring a jacket (lowest is high 60s so expect maybe mid 70s)
Get beat up by the "moke", or what I'd like to think as the pacific islander redneck.
During Kawaii-Kon I won't be able to move around as much as I'm doing the video gaming section. :)

Fixed, L&L serves horrible undercooked or burnt to a crisp food. Not to mention as a culinary student I'll tell you 90% of them have horrible hygiene. It'd be much better if someone took him to Pioneer Saloon on Monsarrat, it's about half a city block away from the CBTL I work at.
PS. The Hiroshima dome is actually a big tourist thing, a lot of English tours make that one of the spots they visit. *cue shooting star*

I'm sure you will have time to meet up, because HVGL will be running like 3/4s of the video game room. Or so ive heard
If you come to Kawaii-kon its a beautiful convention center and is conveniently placed in downtown where most of the hotels are. I believe you can get a small discount at the "aloha hotel" if you are staying there for the kawaii-kon. The aloha hotel is like across the street from the hawaii convention center.
Other than that definitely go to Hanauma bay.

You would be surprised at how Japanese culture has influenced Hawaii. Oh yeah great stuff to pick up anime trinkets
"Toys N Joys"

Anyone tells you north shore its usually too big for tourists.

I say go surfing on North Shore if you know how to surf. There's also diving and hiking up Diamond Head. I don't recommend going to the Shore Bird Restaurant during lunch time. Every time I've been there I had to wait 40-60 min for my food (alot of pigeons in there also). At night it's a bit better because you cook your own food on an outdoor stove. Also, that restaurant is right on the beach so it has a beautiful view.
For lunch, I definitely recommend to go to Zippy's. I haven't met someone yet that dislikes their chili. L&L Drive-In makes good chicken katsu but that's all I can recommend from them. Uh....oh yeah, malasadas. Buy a box from Leonard's Bakery if you're ok with eating fresh bread coated with sugar. imo they make the best malasadas
As Fakku_Hawaii suggested, Toys n' Joys is a good place to get trinkets.
Oh and during the Hawaiian International Film Festival, they'll be showing One Piece: Strong World in Jap w/ English Subs. I think it's about $10/ticket. Here's the link if you wanna check it out. http://hiff.org/program/index.php/films/detail/1826
bit sad I can't go. missed last year due to sickness and alot of things planned this year ><
