Baldur's Gate

So yeah, i even looked in VG list and haven't found it.
But rather than asking some generic crap like who played it etc etc *i doubt anyone will be interested if i played this game when i said that on the second+ page of this thread*
But here's the question: I WANT TO UNDERSTAND THE GAME MECHANICS 100% or at least 80%
Yeah i completed the game *on easiest diff* but i want to do it the RIGHT way, or even the HARD way. And since my knowledge in ad&d is about a little less than 0 i'm getting my ass handed to me constantly.
As much as i know the first Baldur's Gate is AD&D 2nd edition so
If i get my hands on The AD&D 2nd Edition Player's Handbook will it be enough to understand all i need to play it or do i need something more?
P.S. I never played D&D in real life *the one which is i think a Board game*

You dun need to know anything about D&D to play Baldur's Gate =/ Reading the handbook for the board game will not help much at all except for understanding the mechanics that you can not directly affect. Only thing I can say is; do not rush to your death. Fully utilize the pause function. Battles usually require careful planning, and sometimes it might not help and you need to level up, so go back and do some other, easier quests.
Oh, and if you want Minsc on your party, do his quest line as soon as possible, or hell go berserker rage and try to kill you. Dat is all.

Most of the problems i have with the series are:
1: example> i make a fighter give him 18 str, do i need to give him dex for better to hit rolls or it doesn't affect them?
2: since i grew up playing jRPGs i'm not too fond of status inflicting magic *sleep, poison, stop etc etc*and summoning magic as it seemed to be absolutely useless in most jRPGs. But is it really worth learning in AD&D? if so which ones are exceptionally good?
3: CHA/INT/WIS> Which stats are needed to SPEAK fluently enough to get some extra info from NPCs
4:I would definitely like some great explanation on how DUAL Class option works and what are it's benefits.
5:If i get all the answers i would like to know if they will work with every other AD&D game, in particular : Baldur's Gate 2, Icewind Dale 1,2, Temple of Elemental Evil, Neverwinter Nights 1.
P.S. Those are just the only questions that i remember atm, obviously i have MUCH MORE to actually learn how to play hardcore.

Since you asked, here's your answer:
str (strength), governs the dmg you deal (meele and ranged), how much you can lift and carry, aswell as the skills to jump, climb and swimming (possibly only in the actuall d&d).
dex (dexterity), governs your running speed, chance to hit, ranged combat rolls, armor class, and reflex saves.
con (constitution), regards your health and resistance to disease and poison, aswell as the fortitude saves, concentration skills and fatigue based checks. unlike other attributes, where having 0 renders you imobile or unconcious, having a 0 con kills you (all drain spells are bad, but con is exceptionally so)
int (intellegence), can be seen as your "IQ", and governs your reasoning and learning abileties, increases the number of spells a preparation-based arcane spellcaster (like wisards) can cast per day, aswell as their effectiveness. It also increases the number of skill points gained per lvl. also governs how many languiges you can learn
wis (wisdom), simmilar to int, but increases the number of spells per day and the effectiveness of a divine spellcasters (like clerics) spells. also govern the will saving throws
cha (charisma), governs your attractiveness and persuasive skills. also increases the number of spells a spontaneous arcane caster (like a sorcerer or bard) can cast per day, aswell as their effectiveness.
you should also note that behind every attack you do there are severall "throws" to be made, first, there's a throw to see if you hit (your str (if meele), dex (if ranged), aswell as your opponents armorclass (his def aswell as dex) counts here), then there's a throw to see how much dmg you deal (dependant on the weapon, usually only die-dmg, but sometimes also a flat sum). and then the opponent throws his save throws, to see if he can ignore the dmg.
about dual classes, i believe its just like haveing only one, except, you will have to distrobute your lvls between them, thus becoming weaker in both, but it can also have great assets (shadow dancer ftw!)
you also asked if poisons, summoning etc. are good, well, some of them are exceptionally so (poisoning an opponent and then running away letting it kill him is a valuable tactic, sleep is another VERY GOOD one, becouse you can then make one or more opponents sleep while dealing with the others, also if you can get your hand on charm, go for it, it can be used to persuade, aswell as making enemies fight for you.)
well, its only the basics, but i hope that explains most of it, the rest im sure you can read in either a d&d rulebook, or here: http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/Main_Page there may even be a wiki specifically for Baldur's gate, but i dunno. also every d&d based game works more or less likewise.
ps, BG is one of the best game series i have ever played (possibly on par with Zelda aswell as "Heroes of might and magic III") and if you want another game of the same scale i can forward either "knight of the old republic" or "neverwinter nights" both of them awesome games.

Neverwinter Nights > Baldur's Gate for me but w/e =)
Well, BroFist has covered most of it. I think you should really take this into account though; D&D is nothing like jRPG's. Or rather, there are much less useless things in D&D, and you can play in many different ways and still make the game and have fun playing it. There are no useless stats, even if there are stats more important for certain classes and most spells, even low level ones are good (heck, sleep is a pretty low lvl one and it's soooo good against crowds of low-level (and sometimes mid-level) monsters. Coup de Grace ftw!

Ok some questions were answered and some have not, i wrote a whole poem on what i wanted to know next but my internet connection got cut of while i was at it and it got deleted *that was a huge post indeed* so i'll just say everything again but in short.
I need to know:
1 Still need to know more about DUAL class to actually use it and not regret about it later.
2 Still unknown to me the power of summoning and it's usefulness.
Now for something new:
3 How do i utilize Stealth skill apart from exploring while undetected.
4 Preferred weapon for non tank classes *thief mage etc etc*
5 Bard? wtf and how useful is he? *by BG standarts*
6 1d8 vs 2d4 *i understand this as 1d8 has a min dmg of 1 while 2d4 has a min dmg of 2, is there any more differences?*
7 Can i use Cleric as frontline DD *given the proper weapon.....club maybe?*
I completed BG1,2, IWD1,2, NWN in 2 weeks straight and so far BG1 and IWD2 are the better games for me. NWN was such a pushover, i just took the biggest sword around *in my case it was a dagger of chaos* killed everything that moves. When i customized it in one of the expansions it simply became godlike rendering any resistance futile. While the story was still ok though, no complains there.
P.S.If possible please enlighten me if Temple of elemental Evil is a good enough/hard enough game to play, it looks gorgeous i hope that it plays just the same.

I'm sorry, but i do not know enought about dual classes myself, but like i told you, you will be splitting the lvls between the 2 classes, so its like you can be a lvl 4 druid and a lvl 8 wizard at the same time. As for summoning, from what i recall, is only usefull in the start when the mobs are not very good, and will later on be one-shoted by the worst mobs around.
Stealth is a great tool for scouting, as you said, but when attacking from stealth, you will deal bonus dmg if i recall it right.
Bards are quite usefull, and his spells are mostly buffs for the rest of the team, and i think he has bonuses for persuasion wich can be very usefull, so, he's quite situational.
about the dice, they work excatly like your normal ones, 2d4 has 16 different outcomes, while 1d8 only has 8, now the 16 different outcomes, many of them are the same, so it has basically a more "normalized" dmg, so you have 1/16 chance to get 2, and 1/16 chance to get 8, where the d8 has 1/8 chance to get any number. but you probably allready know this ;)
about your frontline clerics, it's not something i would recomend unless you have another healer in your group already, as unless he has an extencive health pool (wich would then reduce his healing powers, having to go for con instead of wis) he wont survive for very long, so the frontline fighter should have lots of health aswell as a good armorclass (def and dex), he will die quickly to spells, but you should have your ranged dmg char take care of the caster.
when it comes to temple of the elemental evil, i havent tried it out, maybe i should, but i really don't think it will be "nintendo" difficulty like many jrpg's are :)

I really couldn't get into Baldur's gate. I have all four games in a collecters box. A friend gave it to me free a few years back. I spent a good week playing it on and off but I just didn't like it for some reason. Well I didn't too well at it so I stopped playing it, understanding it was a little awkward in general for me.
Haven't played it since. Although this thread has given me a mind to play it again on my old computer and try and give it a second chance. I'll keep my eye on this thread for the info here has been useful.
Sorry I couldn't add any imput about the game to answer your questions, this is the only thread I've seen on the internet to do with Baldur's Gate.

That is not a problem.
I have already started my playthrough so, i will be adding questions pretty soon in hope for answers.

If you're summoning demons, for the love of god have protection from evil cast or you'll get killed by a Glabrezu or something similar. Honestly, the game doesn't require much knowledge of D&D, read a few guides on stat allocation for different classes, thats all you need to know really. As for clerics, you get a sweet hammer of a necromancer in chapter 1 if you're strong enough to kill him, he's in the area with the talking chicken. That'll hold as your main blunt weapon for the rest of the game. Don't mix characters of different alignments in your party (good and evil, that is, they're compatible with neutral but not with each other). Make sure you have each role filled in the party as well.
- Fighter/Tank (2 normally)
- Mage
- Cleric
- Thief (for spot traps and pick locks)
- Archer (although this is optional, I prefer making another mage or fighter)
For a first playthrough, Jaheira and Dynaheir are good to have around, same with Minsc. Important: MAKE SURE YOUR MAGE CHARACTER LEARNS DISPEL MAGIC!!!!!!! This is extremely important, especially once you start fighting annoying stuff like Sirens.
I'll leave these here:

I thought if you take Dynaheir you have to have Minsc along for all the time. Same with Jaheira and Khalid. But yea i'm planning to make my party like this.....
MC,Imoen,Viconia,Dynaheir,Minsc,Dude*bard forgot his name* you get him in Beregost if i remember correctly.
Will that do?
And since you started here's the question for you: How diferent alignment in a party affects my overall performance?
0
If you're good, evil characters in your party will eventually attack you. Same if you're evil, except in reverse. What role will your character play though? Your alignment only matters in regards to compatability with other alignments and your choices, essentially. Minsc is strong, Jaheira and Khalid are good. Jahiera gets some healing magic among other things as well, so she can act as an emergency healer if it comes to it. Imoen is good, dual class her into a mage when you are strong enough and have high thieving skills for her. Idk about Bards, but they're pretty bad in my opinion. They can do a lot of things other classes can do, but they can't do them well, so they're a waste of a slot to me. I'm not sure about Viconia, is she a cleric or a mage?
EDIT: I'm certain there's a way to take Minsc and leave Dynaheir, but I can't remember it off the top of my head. Do his quest asap though, Minsc is really pushy about getting it done.

My MC is Neutral Evil, Viconia is a Cleric and she's Chaotic Neutral or Evil dun remember exactly but she's def Chaotic.

Question Time !
1 My sword has no effect on a monster which i'm sure is not immune to swords.... *skeleton* no matter how hard i try...
2 Basilisks are kinda dangerous with turning my party to stone and such.....how do i fare against such creatures?
3 REROLL option in character creation= Cheating?
EDIT: I would like to know more about *To hit armor class 0* aspect, who knows maybe it can improve my game a bit.

Skeletons are resistant to edged weapons, use blunt weapons or magic. Staffs, Hammers, Flails, they're all useful.
Protection from petrification is required here.
Rerolling isn't cheating, you'll fail horribly if you have bad stats in the stats you require. A fighter with 12 strength isn't gonna do jack on the front lines. Reroll until you get optimal rolls, this isn't pen and paper D&D.
The lower your AC, the better, if I recall correctly. I can't help much here.
EDIT: In regards to the Skeletons as well, it depends on the type. I could be a unique or stronger level skeleton, you may need a +1 or other form of magical weapon. You'll come across Doom Knights later in the game, and you need magical weaponry to damage them. This skeleton you're fighting may be the same.

Ugh have to start from the beginning...... fucking Darkside of the sword coast...i can understand the game being harder and all, but monsters respawning right out of my ass when i just killed them *and there are ALOT of them 20 minimum no matter what kind of creature it is, from kobolds to ogres...* now that's just bullshit and i certainly can't take it anymore..... and i just got to chapter 4..

Just turn down the game difficulty. That and increase your AC as much as possible. That and use your minor powers, you should have a few casts of heal minor wounds by now. Its the same thing in the Kobold Fortress, enemies constantly respawn. Just wait until you do the Watcher's Keep, or whatever it's called :P

Okay, so today I accidently stumbled upon this and thought "wow. i've just aged 10 years". Not really a fan of history repeating here so my post is just for heads up. This wizardy will outlive your children's v-cards, mark my words.

Downloadable content WILL BE AVAILABLE!
F*cking rotten industry! The game was already finished years ago.... just make a damn remake with the same rulesets and gameplay, just make better graphics.
Still good news though...

Strategy: When nothing else seems to work.
Explanation:
This guy here pretty much rapes my whole party in a matter of seconds.
I lure him into a thin space, cast "Dispel Magic" then "Otiluke's Resilient Sphere" on my MC.
Since the enemy is too stupid to attack anyone else, i just kill him with my long range fighters haha.
Otiluke's Resilient Sphere is a spell that makes the target completely immune to EVERYTHING. In exchange, the target can't commence any sort of action for the duration of the spell.
And to think i was thinking about this as *useless garbage of a spell* i take my words back.
Strange thing, my MC has -8 AC yet he's still getting hit pretty often...
