Earthquake+Tsunami@Japan

So yeah, 9.0 earthquake hits near Honshu, Japan... And a tsunami was formed after that which flooded the area. Screenshots from a live Japanese TV feed I managed to find. No clue what they are saying though.
EDIT 3/14/11: USGS reviewed the computer estimate, and was upgraded from 8.9 to a 9.0...

It's on the BBC as well
http://edition.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/asiapcf/03/11/japan.quake/?hpt=T2
Tsunami warning has been issued apparently.
I wish those Fakku users in Japan well. STAY SAFE!
A few weeks ago a large one hit New Zealand, and now another hits Japan. I'm wondering what could be hit next.

Well that IS a seismically active region so quakes are to be expected, but wow 8.8 (according to the U.S. Geological Survey)? Sure is getting scary. We're still waiting for the big quake here in Los Angeles. Wish them the best of luck.

There's something funny there. With the approaching "supermoon" on March 19th, the world will experience a surge in tectonic shifts, water tides and increased magnetic disturbances. Same happened last year. During the Jan-May period two earthquakes struck Haiti and Chile. Now two in New Zealand and Japan. So cautious....
I'm scared of earthquakes. And we are expected on this year...or next.

So that's why the earthquakes have been happening. Are "supermoons" rare?

Yeah i heard the same thing, no one will be ready once it actually happens much like all these disasters.
but
OT: Yes they might be recurring after shocks in the up coming days for them, due to the plates not being stable. Lets just hope that the plates settle and don't cause another and stronger quake.
Yeah, this "supper moon" is called that because the moon will be at its closet to the earth its ever been. Causing tides and other natural forces to happen? Not much to know other, until it happens.

Oh my God! That's terrible D:
I'm so thankful that my only relatives in Japan live near the apparently unaffected Kagoshima!
The reports coming in though are absolutely devastating :(
Keep these people in your prayers!

Actually the moon will be in 'Full Moon' phase and approx. 226,765 miles from Earth or so. So that gravity pull is enough to shift the plates and yield the tides. Henceforth a severe anomaly in natural disasters. Supermoons are rare, but not unlikely. It's te closest thus far. And the magnitude of it's effects may or may not be seen right away.

Hurm, well at least we know why. But damn, thanks for the info guys.

Still something we should prepare for.
Seems Guam, Russia, and Taiwan (along with a few other countries) have issued a Tsunami warning.
They're also saying New Zealand might have to prepare for this, as a Tsunami could hit them in the North.

There were two back to back quakes...if I heard correctly. A 7.9 and an 8.8 that was obscured. So the fact that various nations within that vicinity have issued a tsunami warning gives forth the fact that the waves will have severe devestatin efficiency if targeting nearby land. So as seen already. Anyone remember te Indian Earthquake of 2006? I believe? Same thing.

There is an English stream here: http://english.aljazeera.net/watch_now/
It's in English and are covering everything concerning what could happen later.
Not a pretty sight.

Terrible news all around. I hope everyone there is okay and that the surrounding areas have taken the best precautions they can.

Well more inactive than active. Over the past 6 months minor seismic trembles were recorded in the area. And if it was active, several seismic shocks of at least med level would be recorded. But yeah...
Also, I will say this...for those in the California area, especially those from the Valley, Bay down to Southern SandDiego, save water. And be safe. Trust me...
