religion, oh god... gods!

well, the subject is pretty self explanitory. what do you believe in, was it of your own power or due to family influence? is there anything your skeptical about even if you believe in the religion? do you think that religion is flawed, or a misleading concept? please express yourself but be considerate, your opinion isnt absolute.

let me tell you now that in no way do i discriminate against religion. its one of the most powerful of opinions and i wouldnt dare take somebodies belief away.

im currently an atheist looking into buddhism. i respect that religion is for an understanding of conception and trust in a higher power, among countless other things... but i cant imagine myself trusting in something written by another human. proof is 2 dimensional to begin with, and with nothing to rely on except a book and faith i couldnt possibly follow most religions. although not the primary contributor, i think that religion is a factor in many conflicts happening today... and that it just further seperates ethnicities. ive found buddhism is the only religion that doesnt clutter itself with the foundations of whats right and whats wrong, but just furthers a persons self-understanding.

I deprive all religion of meaning and reason. I am quite interested, and what good I find in them, I ponder and learn from. The bullshit, I learn in order to mock and argue with the fanatics in order to open their eyes.
It is a fascinating subject to me, as is the human need to feel that she knows what is going on, even if the knowledge is but a lie. I consider it a way to gain influense over people, and to make reality simpler.

Also interested in the "occult", for the same reasons. Althought I generally am more friendly towards smaller sects then to the more powerful and dangerous religions.

I won't go into my religion again. It's called Asatru. I mainly say I follow that because it puts a name to what I believe.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asatru for wikipedia information

I'm a catholic... Though, I question my religion, leaning more to science and logic. I'm not completely sure, but I choose to believe in God anyway. You don't lose anything in believing, if there's a God, I got to heaven. If not, oh well?

o_O.

Im also a Roman Catholic, but i don't believe in the literal meanings in the bible; or the stories told in the new testament. I believe the new testament was filled with stories that are used to provide children with ethics and morals that I have kept throughout my life. I believe there is a God and that Jesus Christ could possibly have been his son but at the very least the ideas spread through the new testament are what matters; not if the man stood on said cliff while proclaiming said words... I believe my basis in religion is a key factor to my upbringing and has lead me to be the good(i believe) person I am today. I hope I am right; I hope some day to reach Heaven and be able to sit at God's table, but i don't discount other religions nor would I ever deny their opinions or right to practice. If someone were to find proof tomorrow that Christ was not really the son of God I would continue to consider myself a Christian as the man is not whats important; the message is.

Is the LDS church considered large and dangerous? Because if it is I would be shocked because I think my church is really nice.

This is why I dislike religion. The belief that something is "perfect". The sad thing is that all monotheistic religions are just shades away from this "Either believe or we'll punish you" kind of mentality.

No offense Chuu but, a large portion of Muslims take the book WAY TOO FAR. Thats the downside too, you can't use logic with someone who has "faith". Just doesn't work that way.

You see, in my religion we are free to decide our own fate. We make our way through life without having to kneel before anybody as we are all equal and are just brothers and sisters of our gods.

i believe most religions are like that but they have consequences in the end, so if you don't fear hell have at it...

in the end we're all given the chance to make a personal choice, if he chooses to follow his religion at whatever cost what kind of person would you be to look down upon him?

i'm not specifically targeting you here Puri.

Depends on the gender and circumstances. Males, maybe a fine, a lil jail time. Females, death and a lot of humiliation (since if she was raped, she let it happen, which makes her a wanton harlot). Mind, that's only in fundamentalist countries, the more progressive ones it's vastly different, similar to their 'western' counterparts. At least, that's my understanding of it from reading bbc international news for years now.

See I've always found that element of structured beliefs way too imposing. Its good to have moral boundaries, but I've always seen it as better when you are able to trust yourself to build those boundaries on your own.

The choice to follow a reliion no matter what cost means that he has claimed or been enforced a "truth" for himself from the collective. It is very hard to communicate with someone who know he is right, looking down on him or not.

Also, it is my personal belief that man has very little to do with truth, meaning of life and, if they exist; gods. Which means that in my "truth" and my reality, anyone dealing with these subjects as truths are liars. However, I try not to look down on them so much, as I am also human and unsure whatever a truth about no truths are any different then their religions.
Just don't say you know the meaning of life and you'll be fine in my eyes. :P

And most morals are just something you commonly pick up from society, just as society created religion. Religion is but a reflection.

A moslem here, but I'm the peaceful progressive type, not the hardcore extremist. The law is pretty harsh, but it depends which moslem country are you from? Indonesia is one of the progrsive ones, with extemist here and there. But the most Religion Law enforced Country is Arab and Egypt, They will really cut your hand if you steal stuff, just like the Law of Hammurabi from Babylonia. Oh yeah watching hentai/porn is less sinful than raping, or free non-marital sex. But Islam is pretty lenient, you must pray 5 times a day in a alloted time, but each pray will not take 5 minutes to do it. And they mark everything constructive to the mind and body as a good deed, even if it's just learning something.
