I've noticed quite a few people get angry when someone refers to an anime or manga as a cartoon or comic. Does it bother you when people do this? Why or why not? Do you refer to anime/manga as cartoon/comics?

Personally I think that while it's useful to use the terms anime and manga to specify what you're talking about, because there are a lot of differences that arise when a show or graphic novel is made in a different culture, I see nothing inherently wrong with people using the terms cartoon or comic due to the fact that anime/manga fit the generally excepted definitions of these terms.

I've got no problem with people refering anime to cartoons or manga to comic books/graphic novels. They're basically the same thing, just made in different regions of the world.

I do it myself in certain situations, like explaining what they are. I just stick a "Japanese" or "American" infront of whatever I'm trying to explain.

Its all a matter of ignorance and basically not knowing. I mean if one barely knows anything about comics/cartoons in the first place, what chance will they have mentioning anime/manga. Personally, I don't care as long they mention the word "japan," japanese," etc. somewhere in the sentence to specify.

I use the terms Japanese comics/cartoons all the time to explain anime/manga. This is mainly because half the people in my school think of hentai when they hear the word anime in i need to clarify what anime is to keep myself from being discovered.

So long as they don't call it "Japanimation", they can call it whatever they want.

Anime/manga is a subset of cartoons/comics. At least, that is how I see it.

The question I always pose though is this: Is anime/manga a style, or a nationality? Does art style or being japanese make a show anime for instance? Is a show made by someone in the U.S. in a similarly drawn style to anime anime? Would a show that emulated the style of the old justice league cartoons made in Japan be anime?

I go for the style idea myself, but I know some people get mad if you refer to a non-japanese show as anime because it imitates the style.

And then of course, there are fusion styles, like Teen Titans, which I thought had awesome animation.

That's not a bad question. Commercially speaking "anime" often seems to refer to any non-American cartoons or non-commical American cartoons marketed to a slightly older audience from what I've seen.

Very few people under the age of 40 get confused when I say "anime" so I usually call anime anime instead of cartoons. I call manga comics though because it saves time. My English teacher from last year is the only person that isn't in my general age bracket that has come up to me while I was reading it and said "Oh, you read manga?". There are even plenty of people I know (and hang around with) that would be confused by the term manga.
