Having never seen any Casshern before outside of the live action movie I have no idea what the plot of the original series is. So if Casshern SINS is a remake or an adaptation I have no idea. As such I will be summarizing the episode as neutrally as possible.
First a little history. This much is pretty much known about the Casshern universe. Dr. Azuma creates some robots, they decide humanity is bad and thus try to eliminate them. The good doctor's son has himself turned into a robot-slaying cyborg to save humanity.
There is no OP so nothing smexy to glean from it. However the episode starts off in an appropriately gloomy and barren world with Casshern mowing down a horde of angry robots. They're chanting "Devour Casshern," as there appears to be a rumor among the robots that the one who eats Casshern will gain immortality and stop Ruin and the End of the World.
Ruin appears to be some sort of robot disease that is breaking them down (rusting lulz) and thus their world is ending. Casshern has apparently caused Ruin by killing Luna the Light-Giver. After he did this (in the past, so perhaps the first episode is like beginning of Berserk, more on this later) he went to sleep and has just woken up in time for the first episode to start.
After he defeats the robots we switch views to an old man (probably a robot) and a young girl (the one you can see Casshern hugging in the trailer)with white hair traveling. He can be heard having a conversation with someone else about Casshern waking up and how he'll probably be quite busy now.
The young girl goes to play by the sea collecting seashells where she happens across Casshern. She goes up to him and asks him if he's human because she's never seen anyone as beautiful as him. She also asks his name and reveals hers is Ringo. It's at this point we find out that Casshern has lost his memory while he was asleep. He takes the intuitive leap that his name is Casshern since a plethora of robots were calling him that. But he can't answer as to whether he is human or robot.
Ringo turns out to be a robot that was repaired by the old man she's traveling with. O-Zi (sounds like oji but hey, madhouse subbed it so *shrug*). She mentions that O-Zi said she would have been quite beautiful but she'll never grow up now because of the Ruin. While Casshern goes off to stare into the ocean and be emo about this, even though he can't remember, a random robot shows up and and decides it doesn't like Ringo because "Children smell new."
So Casshern starts kicking its ass, for some reason this makes Ringo extremely scared. After he's finished killing the robot O-Zi shows up to collect Ringo and drives off in his truck after telling Casshern to stay away from them.
This is when the pink haired dude (robot? human? cyborg? unconfirmed) from the trailer shows up again (he popped up briefly before to say hi to Casshern and laugh at him). Casshern asks him "Do you know what I am?" somewhat desperately. The man instead proclaims how he hates Casshern. I can't remember if he states the reason or not (I don't think he does, perhaps its related to Luna though). He does not give his name.
opinion
I'm fairly certain that's where I remember it ending, well shortly afterwards, don't recall what else was said. Anyways, so the whole Berserk style starting at the end is quite possible, but like I said I have no idea where this show is going, so just gonna throw out the feeling I got.
The animation is absolutely GREAT! It's Madhouse so it's got great pedigree obviously. The character designs are stupendously retro and melded with high quality modern animation it definitely feels like a show that is going to stand out this fall.
