[General] Anime subbed or dubbed? Choose your destiny.

It depends. If the English dub is good, I'll go w/ that but if the English dub version is not good, then I'll go w/ the subbed version. Anyways, was a similar thread like this already made before?

OT: I prefer subbed animes over dubbed ones. I can learn some new Japanese words while watching subbed animes and the anime would feel more original(?) since the audio is original. It's just better than dubbed animes.

Usually subbed are what i download or watch. Depends on what the anime is and how fast the dialogue is.

For the moment I'll forget your grammar.

First of all this question have been asked numerous times. I even recall seeing this question being asked on the front page.

Enough of that; let's jump straight to the question. Because of my childhood, I tend to avoid dubs at all cost. But before I start babbling on why subs are far superior than dub. I just want to say that, not all dubs are equally terrible. I would even consider a few dubs good. And example on that would be Ginko in Mushi-shi (unfortunate I can't find any video of it).

• Usually Japanese voice actors are better at expressing feelings. I remember Yurixhentai saying something about hearing the most authentic cry ever in My Neighbor Totoro. Which would imply that the English dub wasn't as authentic.

• It feels more realistic. Most animes takes place in Japan or at least has a Japanese protagonist. Spice and Wolf doesn't take place in Japan nor does it have a Japanese protagonist. And therefor it sounds silly when the Japanese tries to pronounce the English names. In other words it doesn't sound as realistic as it would do with a English voice actor it also loses it's flow.

• The synchronization could also be a problem when dubbing something. Whenever something is out of sync it looks wrong.

• You don't have to read the subs all the time. Which can be tiring and annoying at times. Instead you just listen.

• Whenever you watch something in sub. You focus more on the text then the actually video. And therefor miss some of it's beauty.
  Before you start complaining about how wrong I am on this point. Watch a visually stunning anime two times. First time with sub, the second time without. An anime I would suggest for this would be Bakemonogatari.

Subs always.There are some good Dubs but for the most part (90%) the dub just sounds awful....

I can watch things dubbed, but subs are always better.

I like things dubbed, as stated above, you spend so much time reading the subtitling that you miss the action and scenery in the video. I watched Ghost in the Shell:2 before a dub was made for it, and a year and a half later the dubbed version came out and I realized how much detail and clues I had missed, it was like watching a totally different movie. That being said, if I knew japanese I would watch it in its native tongue.

With the rising percentage of good dubs, I'm still down with both.

I always watch subbed anime, I always read books in the authors original language and I never speak in tongue! =P

I always find you lose something in the translation, and sure subs are still a translation but at least you havent changed the actualy words still spoken in the anime. Also since I do not always use the subs anyway I guess my pov is a bit narrow but hell, I even buy Japanese written work even if I cant properly read it all as well as I would like but I am improving!

In the end, I will always seek to enjoy an art of work as close to the source as I can, and if that means learning a third language then so be it!

So yea, voted for subbed anime is for the win, because this is probably in most cases the closest you will get to the vision its creator(s) had in mind.

Subbed, its harder to get a point across when its dubbed especially if there is some sort of pun.
