NGE vs Rebuild Movies

Recently been thinking about Neon Genesis Evangelion after finishing the third rebuild movie and I feel a bit underwhelmed and perhaps a bit disappointed with the new movies. I understand that the original series is a massive achievement which in my opinion is one of the best works of art I have witnessed within any medium or genre. Which left me excited and worried for these new movies and whether they would be able to live up or even come near the stupidly high standards set by its predecessor. But as you may have noticed, for me the rebuild movies have come no where near the original series expect surpassing it only in animation quality due to obvious reasons. Here's a quick pros/cons list I've thought up for the new rebuilds.
Rebuild Movies:
Pros:
- Fantastic animation quality
- Great fight scenes
- Impressive soundtrack
- Overall quality of production
- The ballsyness of 3.0
- Great entertaining features BUT [size=10]they are based in the Eva universe which changes about everything. [/h]
Cons:
- The complex characters of the original series are now merely shadows of their former selves. As in the rebuild movies have just taken the 2D shadows of the original 3D characters that showed actual depth.
- The entire atmosphere and mythological side of Eva has been shattered and morphed into an edgy average mech cash cow.
- They might as well change the characters names for how different the characters act at times (They have actually, Asuka Langley Soryu to Asuka Shikinami Langley)
What are your guys' thoughts about these two works?

I don't really even bother comparing them. I enjoy both separately. I feel that people should watch the original before the rebuild series although it isn't required. I can't wait for the 4th movie.

Up until the second movie, Rebuild was amazing stuff IMHO. I never enjoyed the "complexity" - as you call it - of the characters from the original anime, mainly because I didn't feel it was there, or if it was, it wasn't good enough for my taste. Fanfictions have done a better work at addressing that part of the anime, at least in my opinion.
The third movie, while spectacular with its desolate and nightmarish landscapes, ruined everything. Doing such huge changes to what was supposed to be a remake with vastly improved animation and less focus on psychological drama was a mistake, to say nothing of the fact that said changes happened off-screen, so we basically know nothing - only that 'something' happened after Zeruel, something horrible enough to warrant such a radical departure from the previous movies.
I don't have much hopes for the final movie, but considering how epic the first two were, I can live with that.
Also, I still think the original EoE movie is a masterpiece, though it took me quite a lot of time to fully understand it.

I liked what they did to the second movie, derailing from the main story line. Made it interesting to me. I also see the third movie as an intermission. Nothing really happened...

The first rebuild movie kind of lacked the pacing of the original series. It makes Shinji seem even more whiney than he is in the series and none of the character development that made eva an enjoyable watch really occured. As an introduction to the series I actually would not recommend it. It felt too gutted to capture the feel of the original eva. I had a friend who hadnt seen the original watch it with me and I think it turned her off of watching the original series more than it drew her interest.
The other 2 really cant be compared to the original series because they pretty much present an entirely different canon. I enjoyed both and am excitied to see where theyll take the next one but this is because it is basically totally new and not a remake.

There is also the continuation theory that these rebuild movies may in fact be just a continuation from EoE. Which in my opinion would make more sense since Rei has a lot more emotion than in the series, it explains why the sea is red, and why Mari is able to pilot Unit 02 (since she is Shinji's and Asuka's child). But then again this may never be confirmed since Evangelion has an infamous rep for having endings that usually don't spoon feed information to the viewers. I guess we'll just have to see where Anno takes these movies in the 4th rebuild.

I suppose it isnt really fair to call it an alternate canon when such possibilities exist.
I more meant it is totally new content wise and kind of lacks any clear continuity with the original series and its end. Mari is Shinji and Asukas child o.o? I must be missing something because nothing in the movies suggested that to me.. Maybe I should go watch them again.

The ending of Rebuild 2.0 and almost all of Rebuild 3.0 were tough to swallow for Evangelion fans. I suppose the main problem with the Rebuild movies is that if you've never heard of Evangelion, you probably won't understand anything at all. But if you know about Eva, you will feel like the Rebuilds are something else all together. And in a way, they are.
I agree that the changes make it quite weird. Mari piloting 02, changing its form, Wille, NERV is basically Gendo and Rei... Yeah, when you know about EVA this is pretty weird stuff. So, my strategy, as it were, to watch the Rebuilds and to wait for 4.0 is to simply expect the unexpected. I am hopeful it will be something quite like The End of Evangelion which was insanely mindblowing.
The reason why I chose a clean slate on the Rebuild movies is because of something I call the «Familiarity Principle» (I don't really call it that, I just think about it; and if it exists, it probably has another name). That principle simply states that the version of things we discover first, are the ones that become more dear to us. Therefore, if you listen to a song cover a few times and then listen to the original, you'll like the cover better and the original wil feel alien to you. Or vice-versa.
The same, I think, happens with EVA. So that's why I'm watching Rebuild movies as a whole new experience and try to free my expectations from the shackles of the original. (I say try because I would love to see the Mass Produced EVA make a comeback although I'm thinking it could be unlikely at this point...)
