I am shocked and dismayed that nobody's recommended Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha. I mean, here we are, most of us probably guys, and nobody's heard of the one and only magical girl series that was specifically aimed at us (La Blue Girl notwithstanding)?
I suppose I need to explain the series then, since obviously nobody's heard of it.
Okay, picture the cast of Sailor Moon. Just the cast, not the show, because Nanoha's got a much better storyline than the Sailor Moon anime.
Got 'em in your heads? Good. Now give 'em souped-up magical weapons--swords, warhammers, poleaxes, scythes, etc--to help them use their magic with more competence. You should now be seeing magical girls who fight like the cast of Bleach. Just for the heck of it, give them flight spells, high-powered bombardment spells, and a grab bag of other nifty tricks. You should now be seeing magical girls who fight like Bleach characters but can do most of the same things the cast of Dragonball can do.
Now toss in an engaging storyline stretched out over 13 episodes--and that's just the first season--and characters you can't help but love once you get to know them. Add mature content that is obviously not meant for children--child abuse, for instance, and a bit of fanservice here and there--and you've got Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha.
And to top off the explanation as to why Nanoha is so awesome, I offer up a demonstration; the Youtube clip below documents Nanoha's first battle with Vita in Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A's. Enjoy, then go find Nanoha Classic and soak up its' awesomeness.

My favorites that I would recommend would be Gundam Seed (only the first one though), Outlaw Star, Bleach, Code Geass, and Shakugan no Shana. Then again, I'm a huge action/mecha junkie...
