To my artist's eyes, there are plenty of minute differences, but no point in going there. Animators tend to take shortcuts whenever possible and I agree on that point.

They still look different though.

Not different enough it seems.

They are both looking somewhat to the right with their mouth open, that's about all that's the same.
Taiga is looking more to the right.
Her mouth isn't open as much and is more pointed.
She has sharp eye lashes.
Her nose is more defined, and in a different spot.
She has rounder cheeks.
Her eyebrows are higher.
Her hair is covering her clothes.
Smaller, pointier shoulders.
She is holding a half eaten sandwich.
Even the background is different.
I fail to see how this is even remotely a shortcut. The two images are somewhat similar and that's it.

I'm sorry, but that sounds way too much like something from a manga about artists.
Seriously, tell me you can't imagine this:
Critical person that's initially hostile but later on becomes friendly: "He has no chance of winning the competition."
Older mentor-type character: "He may not win now, but he has the potential. AND THE ARTIST EYE!"

@ Mike: The background and sandwich is irrelevant. So the hair doesn't seem even remotely suspect to you? I didn't recolor it just for kicks you know.
