Toriko Author's Molestation Charge

I don't really have a specific question, but I just found out that the author for Toriko once was arrested for paying an underaged girl to do lewd stuff to him. I guess what fascinates me most is how he still has a career, although I don't really care about what he did, I would imagine that managers and CEO's running Shonen Jump wouldn't let a "pedophile" create a manga for them, are the Japanese people always this chill or is it because Sex with minors is not that big of a crime, I mean obviously he isn't a bad person, it's not like he killed someone, but I would imagine that a magazine aimed at kids wouldn't have a dude with a record of paying kids for sex be one of their mascots. It's just another topic peering and questioning the mentality of the japanese people.
I would imagine there would be a big outrage in America by fat pissed off mothers if say a popular children's author was written by a NAMBLA member.

I'm assuming he did this before he created Toriko. If it happened in the past then it should not really be an issue unless he is literally the "face" that represents his work. As long as he is creating quality work then I see no problem.
Now if he did that while working on Toriko then I could see your point. But like I said, since he isnt the one having direct contact with kids then it shouldn't be a problem. I would have a more valid argument, but I don't really know how mangaka authors are viewed in Japan compared to their work.

I always pondered on this when I first started taking interest in Toriko and end up looking him up at wikipedia. At first, I wondered how he was able to make Toriko after the incident and then as I read on, I realized there weren't that many chicks from the beginning for some reason (Rin being the only exception.) Whatever he's done, it's all in the past but I can't help to think that I'm reading a great comic made by a former sexual offender. He's most likely moved on from his past, so whatever.
