Here's some more Miu.

On the basis of character(and not who looks the best), I definitely would put Vash from Trigun up there. His struggle with his beliefs, the nature of evil, and the need to combat evil in practical circumstances make him, at least to me, both deep and admirable.

Additionally, there is a whole host of great characters in Gundam Wing, Tres, Relena, Heero, Quatre, Zex, and others. Removing any one of them would leave a gaping whole in the series.

I'd have to say either Tomoe Hotaru from Sailor Moon, Fate Testarossa from Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, or Hayate Yagami from Nanoha A's, with Nanoha herself coming in somewhere right behind those three.

Hotaru, Fate, and Hayate have all had to put up with a lot of shit in their lives (Hotaru's demonic possession and social alienation, Fate's abusive mother, Hayate's paralysis) and all have come out on top of their problems with the help of their friends (Chibi-Usa, Nanoha, and the Wolkenritter respectively).

Hayate got the best deal, I think. She decides to voluntarily leave the perfect dream world that was built for her, but in doing so she not only acquires the means to resurrect her friends, she also becomes a magical girl to boot.

Hiraga Saito from Zero No Tsukaima, Bit Cloud from Zoids Zero, Bart Garsus frome VanDread, Shipo from Inuyasha. These are my favorite Anime characters to date. There are many more to come as long as I watch Anime.
