I'm a little puzzled however about the privacy you brought up. That's has nothing to pertain at what this is about really. So I'll ignore that part.
But having a search user option would eliminate the need for a friend/following system.
Like I said before, this is just a suggestion to navigate a little easier through the site, or to others' profiles. I'm not saying "this site sucks without, it end of story." Not at all. You all seem to be taking it a bit too seriously just for a suggestion.

Another problem which comes to mind may be the harrassment of female users; there have been previous incidents of such harrassment.
However, at the end of the day, I agree that there is some difficulty in locating certain members. especially if they are no longer as active.
